Evening Wrap: ASX 200 jumps 150pts on easing Middle East tensions — WDS, STO tumble as oil slips below US$100/bbl
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 154.9 points higher, up 1.85%.
Mentioned
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 154.9 points higher, up 1.85%.
The ASX 200 surged as easing inflation data and growing optimism around Middle East ceasefire talks triggered a sharp risk-on rotation across beaten-down sectors. Falling oil prices and improving sentiment helped unwind defensive positioning, driving a broad-based rebound led by miners and gold stocks.
In stock specific news:
4DMedical (4DX) (+34.6%) — rocketed after securing deployment of its imaging technology at the Mayo Clinic.
Alliance Aviation (AQZ) (+27.4%) — surged after reassuring investors it has limited exposure to fuel price movements under its wet lease agreements.
Pepper Money (PPM) (+5.4%) — rose after ending takeover talks with Challenger, stating the proposal was not reasonably capable of execution.
Rio Tinto (RIO) (+1.6%) — gained after securing $2 billion in government support tied to its Boyne aluminium smelter and clean energy commitments.
Amplitude Energy (AEL) (-36.7%) — plunged after deeming its Isabella gas discovery non-commercial and abandoning the well.

ASX 200 Session Chart
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 154.9 points higher at 8,534.3, 1.8% from its session low and 0.35% from its high. Reflecting the strength in the benchmark, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by an overwhelming 253 to 36.
The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+8.2%) led a massive relief rally as one of the hardest hit sectors over the past two weeks snapped back sharply. Hopes that a ceasefire could allow oil to flow again through the Strait of Hormuz helped unwind the inflation shock narrative. Greatland Resources (GGP) (+10.9%) and Capricorn Metals (CMM) (+10.5%) surged, while Newmont Corp. (NEM) (+8.9%) also rallied strongly.
Resources (XJR) (+3.2%) followed as improving risk sentiment and stronger base metals prices supported the broader mining complex. Copper rallied and traders moved back into cyclicals after weeks of heavy selling. Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+7.8%) and Mineral Resources (MIN) (+7.4%) led gains.
Energy (XEJ) (-2.3%) reversed sharply as the unwind of the conflict premium drove oil prices lower. As with all hedge trades, when the news turns good, the downside can be swift. Whitehaven Coal (WHC) (-4.6%) and Woodside Energy Group (WDS) (-3.2%) fell, while Santos (STO) (-2.3%) also declined.
Utilities (XUJ) (-0.1%) slipped alongside other defensive sectors like Consumer Staples (XSJ) (-0.1%) as capital rotated back into risk assets. Origin Energy (ORG) (-1.4%) and Coles Group (COL) (-0.5%) were notable decliners respectively.
In commodities, Brent crude dropped 3.7% in Asian trade to US$96.53/bbl as easing geopolitical tensions reduced the risk premium embedded in energy markets.
Gold surged in Asian trade, rising 3.1% to US$4,538/oz, while silver jumped 4.9% to US$73.00/oz as risk appetite improved and safe-haven flows stabilised. Lower oil equals lower inflation, equals lower market yields... equals good for non-yielding gold!
Copper rose 0.84% in Asian trade to US$5.50/lb, reflecting improved sentiment toward global growth, while iron ore fell 2.2% in Singapore trade to US$105.40/t.
Lithium prices continued their gains in China trade, with GFEX lithium carbonate futures rising 3.8% to CNY158,300/t, while rare earths edged higher with NdPr up 0.2% to CNY712,500/t.
The rebound drove strong gains across critical minerals names including Elevra Lithium (ELV) (+11.7%), Liontown Resources (LTR) (+11.6%), PLS Group (PLS) (+8.4%), IGO (IGO) (+7.0%), Iluka Resources (ILU) (+9.3%) and Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+2.4%).

Analysis
As I said in today’s ChartWatch *LIVE* Webinar, last night’s candle and the couple before it, are precisely what we’d expect based on the MOTN proposition of the trends and price action that preceded them.
But that’s not how markets work right now! Nope!
Bad news: Market tanks. 💥
Good news: Market rockets. 🚀
Rinse. Repeat! ♻️
The good news you’ve no doubt already heard about a potential Middle East conflict ceasefire occurred after the New York close.
So, Tuesday’s clear supply-side showing — which after Monday’s upward pointing shadow, we’d say 99 times out of 100 would MOTN lead to a continued decline in the Comp’s price — is moot!
Ancient history!
Superseded by new information that will no doubt trigger a sharply higher open for tonight’s candle.
But, keep in mind, that open is irrelevant.
Only shorts desperately covering back care about the opening price. The big money only cares about the close:
High close: FOMO is real + HOFU is real + BTD is real = Rally has some legs (another day at least!) ✅
Low close: STR remains intact + 🚫FOMO + 🚫HOFU = The rally was viewed by the market as an opportunity to continue offloading their stock-based risk. ⚠️🚨
So, apart from pointing you in the direction of my broader analysis in the webinar recording (link below 👇), I’ll suspend any further analysis on the Comp for now (what’s the point!?) and we’ll come back tomorrow and review the quality Wednesday candle.
(*MOTN = More Often Than Not, FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out, HOFU = Holding On For Upside, BTD = Buy The Dip, STR = Sell The Rally!)

1/3RP (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100% 🪣).
Key levels
The next key point of demand is 21522, with the 20906-21033 zone not far beyond that. We'll watch the price action and candles closely there for signs excess demand is indeed manifesting itself. The short term downtrend ribbon (presently 22366-22561) is the nearest critical zone of point supply, and 22570-22907-23170-23321 aren't far beyond that.

Analysis
Tuesday's Candle:
= Long upward pointing shadow ⚠️
= Strong open + fade all day into the close ( = STR + 🚫FOMO + 🚫HOFU) ⚠️
= MOTN 📉
Wednesday's Candle:
= Long white-bodied candle with close near session's high ✅
= Strong open + hold firm / sustained excess demand / close near high ( = FOMO + HOFU + BTD) ✅
= MOTN 📈
All is good in the world again! Soon, America and Iran will be hugging and forgetting their differences. Israel and Iran will be hugging and forgetting their differences. Iran, having learned the error of its ways, will abandon its nuclear weapon aspirations for the rest of history and begin treating its people with the care and respect for basic human rights they deserve.
There. Done.
All better now. 🤗

No change to my prevailing OTP risk bucket setting: 1/3RP 🪣 (i.e., my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in Australian stocks is 33%).
Key levels
8284 is the closest zone of demand (static). The ASX 200 must at least close back above the short- and long term uptrend ribbons (presently 8679-8746. and 8663-8752 respectively) to reclaim any semblance of demand-side control.
