Welcome back to the Short Seller Series – A recap of the most heavily shorted stocks on the ASX and those experiencing significant changes to short interest over the past week.

Short selling data is four days behind today's date because reporting is not mandatory until three business days after the trade. The tables below will compare:

  • Week-on-week changes between 14 and 21 September 2026

  • Month-on-month changes between 24 August and 21 September 2026

  • Most covered and rising short tables record week-on-week changes of ~0.5% or more

Short interest saw some big week-on-week moves, likely driven largely by flows from the S&P/ASX and MSCI quarterly index rebalances. These triggered short covering in removed and down-weighted names alongside fresh short positions elsewhere. Recent market weakness, post-reporting season repositioning and soaring bond yields have likely added to the churn.

Most Shorted

The most shorted stocks were largely unchanged, with the exception of Lotus and Boss Energy (more on those below).

Rising Shorts

Minerals 260 shorts jumped 5.2% week-on-week as investors, like a result of the recent $250 million two-tranche placement at $0.88 per share. The raise was announced on 16 September and Tranche 1 settled on 22 September. A general meeting to approve Tranche 2 is scheduled for late October, so expect these positions to unwind.

Shorts are also building in critical minerals developers including Arafura Rare Earths, Brazilian Rare Earths, Lindian Resources, Core Lithium and Elevra Lithium, as well as data centre electricians Southern Cross Electrical, Genusplus and SKS Technologies.

Most Covered

Bapcor leads the covering as short interest continues to unwind after a massive squeeze on its FY26 result. Underlying EBITDA of $152.5 million beat guidance and net bank debt fell to $135.0 million from $364.8 million, removing the balance sheet bear case. The stock rallied 41.7% on results day (27 August) and has added a further 25% since.

Uranium developers Bannerman, Lotus and Deep Yellow are also being covered after the long-term contract price hit US$97 a pound, its highest level in more than 18 years. The strength in contract prices hasn't flowed through to equities, though, with the Global X Uranium ETF down 15% since 25 August and 6% year-to-date.

Shorts are also closing in consumer names after reporting season, including G8 Education, Myer, Universal Store, Webjet and Jumbo Interactive.
