Mentioned

Welcome back to the Short Seller Series – A recap of the most heavily shorted stocks on the ASX and those experiencing significant changes to short interest over the past week.

Short selling data is four days behind today's date because reporting is not mandatory until three business days after the trade. The tables below will compare:

  • Week-on-week changes between 3 and 11 August 2026

  • Month-on-month changes between 13 July and 11 August 2026

  • Most covered and rising short tables record week-on-week changes of ~0.5% or more

Most Shorted

Not much movement among the most shorted stocks. Boss Energy's short interest is nearing a two-year low as the company works towards an accelerated feasibility study for its Honeymoon Uranium project. For context, the stock suffered a 42% one-day selloff in July 2025 after blowout FY26 cost guidance and uncertainty over how many additional wellfields it needs, given ore deposits that proved less continuous than expected. Several analysts believe Boss has fully pivoted to a new design and halted legacy wellfield development, but some uncertainty lingers heading into the new study, slated for this month.

Rising Shorts

There aren't many consistent themes right now, though with reporting season upon us there are plenty of case-by-case reasons to short. That said, the biggest week-on-week increase (Australian Clinical Labs) has already squeezed the life out of short sellers, rallying as much as 21.7% on Monday after its FY26 result, where revenue fell 0.7% but NPAT rose 4.3% on cost management and lower depreciation. Management noted that despite subdued GP attendance volumes, Medicare fee changes and persistent inflationary pressure, it stayed focused on strategy and lifted margins year on year to 9.4%. It's worth watching stocks with high or growing short interest into reporting season, as that positioning can drive some extreme price action.
