Interesting takeaways

  • QSR sector in the crosshairs: Lots of changes among the most shorted stocks in recent weeks, with short sellers ramping up bearish bets against the quick service restaurant sector via Domino's Pizza and Guzman Y Gomez.

  • Iluka Resources seeing rising shorts: Short interest is climbing against Iluka Resources, which offers dual exposure to mineral sands and rare earths. Earlier this month, Iluka announced plans to suspend production at its Cataby mine and SR2 in Western Australia due to subdued demand for mineral sands and downstream products.

Interesting takeaways

  • I've never seen such a long list stocks for both 'rising shorts' and 'most covered' lists

  • Broad short interest building in gold miners: A wide range of gold miners seeing an increase in short interest, including RMS, GGP, OBM, SX2, BC8, NST and WGX. There's no denying the bullish momentum behind gold prices, though many analysts find it hard to justify further upside given recent share price moves. It's unclear why we're seeing such a broad rise in short interest across several large caps.

  • Other notable shorting themes: Tech names like Digico, Gentrack and Superloop are attracting shorts, alongside unprofitable/spec plays such as Vulcan, Droneshield, Sayona and Iperionx. Discretionary retailers including Adairs, Guzman Y Gomez and Domino's are also seeing increased bearish positioning.

Interesting takeaways

  • Paladin Energy shorts retreat: Paladin Energy experienced a sizeable drop in short interest as the stock rallied to a seven-month high last week. Recent catalysts include a US-UK agreement to accelerate nuclear power approvals and signals from US Energy Secretary Chris Wright about plans to increase the national strategic uranium stockpile.

  • Mixed picture for gold miners: An unusual basket of gold miners is experiencing short covering, including Regis Resources, Emerald Resources, Bellevue Gold, Vault Minerals and Evolution Mining. This suggests growing short interest among large caps but short covering among mid caps.

  • Covering continues on beaten-down names: Short sellers continue to exit positions in battered stocks like The Star, Monash IVF, Peninsula Energy (which is bouncing), OFX Group and Kogan.
