Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that have hit fresh yearly highs and lows over the past week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to powerful underlying drivers — such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Massive breadth uplift saw 52 (26%) of S&P/ASX 200 stocks rally to fresh yearly highs. The market crossed 9,000 for the first time last week, with year-to-date returns hitting double digits for the first time this year. While defensive sectors like Staples, Healthcare and Utilities continue to lag, growing rate cut expectations are driving outsized gains in rate-sensitive Real Estate sector, as well as Discretionary and Financials.

  • Industrial stocks delivered strong numbers, with results from Brambles, Monadelphous, Downer and Transurban all well received by the market.

  • Big Four divergence saw strong gains from ANZ, Westpac and NAB, while CBA struggles—now down around 10% from its 25-June all-time high.
