The ASX 200 fell for a fourth consecutive session as earnings season delivered an unambiguous verdict on the Australian consumer — JB Hi-Fi's 12% dive, NAB's confirmation of "challenges and uncertainties," and Lendlease's fourth loss in five years all pointing to the same conclusion. Standing strong: stuff that doesn't rely on the Aussie household, like gold, copper, coal, and uranium. The sector rotation games continue!

ASX 200 Intraday Chart

Markets
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 42.0 points lower at 9,073.2, 0.46% from its session high and just 0.1% from its low. Despite the slump at benchmark level, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers pipped decliners by 143 to 142.
The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+3.8%) was Monday's clear best sector as COMEX gold futures gained 0.4% to US$4,456.60/oz and COMEX silver futures added 1.5% to US$66.10/oz. With every consumer-facing sector in the red on domestic earnings misses, capital had one obvious destination — sectors insulated from the Australian household's travails.
Gold producers tick that box emphatically: their revenues are USD-denominated, their markets are global, and a weaker domestic growth outlook if anything improves the rate-cut outlook that supports the bullion price. Predictive Discovery (PDI) (+6.3%), Catalyst Metals (CYL) (+6.0%), Evolution Mining (EVN) (+5.1%), Ora Banda Mining (OBM) (+5.0%), and Newmont (NEM) (+3.8%) all surged.

S&P-ASX 200 Materials Sector Index intraday chart
Materials (XMJ) (+1.8%) caught the same rotation, boosted by a strong commodity price backdrop — COMEX copper futures gained 1.7% to US$6.724/lb after London copper rose 1.8% on Friday. Aeris Resources (AIS) (+3.7%), South32 (S32) (+3.4%), Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+2.1%), and BHP (BHP) (+1.4%) — the latter positioning ahead of Tuesday's full-year results — all advanced.
Energy (XEJ) (+0.9%) completed the resources trifecta. The spot price of Brent crude held near US$88.36/bbl after rising 1.7% on Friday, with the US promising to ratchet up economic pressure on Iran keeping supply disruption fears elevated. Coal stocks led the sector — New Hope Corp. (NHC) (+4.9%) and Yancoal Australia (YAL) (+1.9%) were the standout coal names. Oil and gas producers Beach Energy (BPT) (+1.2%), Woodside Energy (WDS) (+0.8%), and Santos (STO) (+0.8%) were all modestly higher.

S&P-ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary Sector Index intraday chart
Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) (-3.0%) was the session's epicentre. JB Hi-Fi (JBH) (-12.3%) delivered the day's most damaging individual stock result — record sales growth and a rise in full-year profit, yet still a miss on market expectations as fourth-quarter spending faltered.
Analysts were quick to point out that recent results of banking and consumer-facing companies suggest that Australian households are struggling. Retailers are at the coalface of that struggle, with Super Retail Group (SUL) (-6.6%), Harvey Norman (HVN) (-4.6% — note: also ex-dividend), Wesfarmers (WES) (-4.4%), Premier Investments (PMV) (-4.7%) all paying the price today.
Financials (XFJ) (-1.8%) extended a bleak stretch. National Australia Bank (NAB) (-4.6%) was the most consequential faller — the bank confirmed that the combination of Middle East conflict-driven inflation, three RBA rate rises, and the federal budget's property tax changes had created "challenges and uncertainties" for customers, an unusually frank warning that the housing credit cycle is deteriorating across the board.
ANZ (ANZ) (-2.6%) and Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (-1.3%) also fell. Suncorp (SUN) (-4.6%) appeared sharply lower on the tape but went ex-dividend 62 cents per share fully franked today, making the underlying stock movement considerably more modest than it appeared. L1 Group (L1T) (+7.2%) was the sector's standout positive mover after full-year underlying net profit nearly doubled to $188.8 million.

S&P-ASX 200 Financials Sector Index intraday chart
Real Estate (XPJ) (-1.0%) was caught in two headwinds simultaneously — company-specific damage from Lendlease (LLC) (-11.2%), which cut its dividend and posted a $749 million loss (its fourth in five years), alongside the generalised bond yield spike of Friday that compressed property trust valuations. Stockland (SGP) (-3.0%), GPT Group (GPT) (-2.5%), and Dexus (DXS) (-2.2%) all fell on the yield component.
Health Care (XHJ) (-0.8%) gave back some of its recent strong gains — a combination of Friday's bond yield spike weighing on long-duration healthcare multiples and straightforward profit-taking after an exceptional several weeks. Australian Clinical Labs (ACL) (+14.9%) was the session's sole healthcare standout, surging after posting earnings that beat consensus. Cochlear (COH) (-1.8%), Pro Medicus (PME) (-1.7%), Telix Pharmaceuticals (TLX) (-1.7%), and CSL (CSL) (-1.4%) all fell.

S&P-ASX 200 Health Care Sector Index intraday chart
In other commodities moves, lithium stocks extended their recovery despite GFEX lithium carbonate futures falling 1.2% to CNY 153,360/t — the equity gains running ahead of the commodity lead again. Core Lithium (CXO) (+5.6%), Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (+4.5%), Develop Global (DVP) (+4.4%), IGO (IGO) (+3.3%), and Liontown Resources (LTR) (+2.0%) all advanced.
Uranium stocks recouped most of Friday's losses as COMEX uranium futures edged up 0.23% to US$87.45/lb — their highest level since April 23 — with Boss Energy (BOE) (+4.8%), Bannerman Energy (BMN) (+4.3%), Paladin Energy (PDN) (+4.1%), and Deep Yellow (DYL) (+3.1%) all surging.

Analysis
It’s a major supply zone, silly! That’s why it’s slow going here – even considering as good as everything else looks for the Comp (i.e., short and long term uptrends, solid price action since 24425, generally demand-side candles).
In fact, I’d be far more surprised if we saw a massive white-bodied candle blasting straight through here.
Chip, chip, chip, chip… ⛏️
The demand side is chipping away at the fear and doubt that lies within 26789-27191.
Either the dam wall will break, and with supply consumed, the Comp’s price will gush higher.
Or the dam holds… and the fear grows, infecting more and more of those holding cash… causing them to withhold their purchases and pull their bids.
We’ll know soon enough which scenario it is. Until then, I see no reason to change my current portfolio risk position.
(I.e., I'll do something when I have a signal to do something!)

I am 2/3RP on US stocks. (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).
Key Levels
27191 is the key point of supply vs the short term trend ribbon (presently 25998-26130) is the key zone of demand.

Analysis
Here’s some insights from UBS via my X feed this morning:

(Mutters under breath… bloody OTP! 😭)
Kinda says it all, doesn't it?
Anyways, I'm not complaining — it just is. And we must deal with it as best we can, and manage our risk according to the trends, price action, candles, and volume.
I.e., the demand-supply environment and who's in control of it.
The problem is, I'm not so sure who's in control right at this very moment: after market close on Monday 17 August.
Clearly, in the short term, the last five or six candles aren't ideal. We've had banks blowing up, mining blowing up, and a few in between. Our shiny 9297 new high feels like it's now a very long way away...
But it's only a couple-hundred points... A bit more than a couple percent. In theory, if the broader short and long term uptrends, plus strong price action signals from 8561 reassert themselves — we could cover that gap pretty quickly.
Nothing goes up in a straight line, right? Pullbacks are a natural part of any uptrend, right? 🤔
Well, sure. That's usually a pretty sound way of thinking. But this is the OTP...
We love to go from hero to zero. Just look at the last three or four record highs in the chart above, then zoom out to the three or four before those...
Yep, it ain't pretty. 🤦
But! The future is unknown. 🔮 Just because we love a bit of hero to zero it doesn't mean it's destined to happen this time as well!
We have some very reliable tools on our chart to tell us when "hero" is slipping and "zero" is beckoning: the first trusty tool being the short term trend ribbon.
We're there now. It must hold. Long white candles and or those with long downward pointing shadows here please — telling us that the demand side is lying in wait with confidence to BTD.
That's all we need. We're not asking much. Are we OTP? 🤷
(It makes sense then that if we don't see the good candles in the short term trend ribbon, but instead see the bad ones: long black candles and or those with long upward pointing shadows... well, then OTP = zero it is!)
View
I am FRP on Aussie stocks — waiting for the verdict at the short term trend ribbon before retreating, tail between my legs back to 2/3RP. (My personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in ASX stocks is now 100%).
Key Levels
9297 is the key point of supply to contend with, while demand the short term uptrend ribbon (presently 8998-9068).
