When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to powerful underlying drivers — such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

Market breadth remained strong last week, with 52 of the S&P/ASX 200 stocks (26%) hitting fresh yearly highs despite the broader index ticking just 0.06% higher. Real Estate remains one of the best performing sector in recent weeks based on the volume of stocks reaching new yearly peaks.

Commodities continued their impressive run, with gold prices approaching the US$3,000/oz level while gold miners report massive year-on-year earnings growth. Rare earths stocks like Iluka continue to hover near recent highs, while Lynas tapped the market for $750 million to fund development plans. Even copper stocks like Sandfire have continued breaking out despite relatively muted copper prices.

Financials continued to power ahead. Macquarie noted Financials had the best reporting season — outperforming by 2.5% with net beats of 33 percentage points. There's a clear rotation underway, as CBA continues to trade 9-12% below its June 25 high, while the other Big Four banks have pushed to fresh yearly highs.

Reporting season misses are struggling. Companies that delivered weak numbers, including Guzman Y Gomez (poor FY26 trading update), Sonic Healthcare (missed FY26 guidance), and Inghams (weak FY25 and FY26 guidance) — have all continued grinding lower.
