The ASX 200 edged higher as banks and defensives snapped back after two sessions of heavy rotation into miners. Consumer stocks were the biggest drag, with major retailers reporting slowing sales as rate-hike expectations continued to build.

Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 44.5 points higher at 8,891.8, 0.5% from its session low and just 0.1% from its high. Reflecting the solid gain today, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by 174 to 111.

Aussie shares gained today in spite of market pricing for the next RBA interest rate hike to 4.85% moving to a 100% probability before the end of the year.

Financials (XFJ) (+1.9%) led the session as fund flows rotated back into the banks after two consecutive days of selling — a clean mean reversion to the pattern that defined most of October. Zip Co (ZIP) (+6.6%) was the sector’s standout mover. The major banks all advanced strongly: National Australia Bank (NAB) (+2.3%), ANZ (ANZ) (+2.2%), Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) (+2.1%), and Westpac Banking Corp (WBC) (+1.9%).

S&P/ASX 200 Financials Sector Index (XFJ) intraday chart

Real Estate (XPJ) (+1.8%) was also among the session’s best performers, driven by continued strength from heavyweight Goodman Group (GMG) (+2.3%) and a strong session for Charter Hall (CHC) (+3.3%).

Energy (XEJ) (+1.4%) rebounded as Brent crude steadied overnight after the prior session’s decline, pulling energy stocks back from recent lows. New Hope Corp (NHC) (+2.2%) and Beach Energy (BPT) (+2.2%) led the advance, with Karoon Energy (KAR) (+2.1%) and Woodside Energy (WDS) (+1.9%) also firming.

Communication Services (XTJ) (+0.9%) bounced as utility-like telco stocks — which had sold off with the broader defensive rotation earlier in the week — attracted buyers. Aussie Broadband (ABB) (+3.1%) and Spark New Zealand (SPK) (+2.3%) were the strongest performers. TPG Telecom (TPG) (+2.1%) and Chorus (CNU) (+1.7%) also advanced, with Telstra (TLS) (+1.0%) rounding out the gains.

Utilities (XUJ) (+0.8%) followed the same defensive reversal pattern. AGL Energy (AGL) (+1.6%) and Origin Energy (ORG) (+1.2%) both recovered.

Health Care (XHJ) (+0.5%) edged higher as the defensive bounce extended across the sector. Telix Pharmaceuticals (TLX) (+3.2%) led the advance, followed by Cochlear (COH) (+1.6%), Sonic Healthcare (SHL) (+1.1%), and ResMed (RMD) (+0.7%).

Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) (-2.0%) was the session’s heaviest loser as a string of retailer trading updates flagged slowing sales, compounding the rate-hike anxiety that has dogged the sector since Wednesday’s hot inflation print. Cettire (CTT) (-9.2%) was the hardest hit, while Wesfarmers (WES) (-4.0%) fell sharply after Bunnings reported declining sales. JB Hi-Fi (JBH) (-2.9%) and Super Retail Group (SUL) (-2.8%) extended losses from the prior session.

Consumer Staples (XSJ) (-1.8%) also fell heavily as rate-hike fears weighed on the consumer outlook. Woolworths (WOW) (-3.3%) was the major decliner, with Coles Group (COL) (-1.0%) also lower.

Materials (XMJ) (-0.6%) pulled back as the two-day momentum trade ran out of steam — and several poorly received trading updates flagged higher input costs, a recurring concern for the sector since the onset of the Middle East conflict earlier in the year. SGX benchmark iron ore futures rallied +1.5% to US$91.50/t in the Asian session, clawing back from one-year lows, but it wasn’t enough to lift sentiment.

Champion Iron (CIA) (-17.3%) was the session’s biggest individual faller after a negative earnings report, while South32 (S32) (-1.8%), Sandfire Resources (SFR) (-1.5%), Mineral Resources (MIN) (-1.0%), and BHP (BHP) (-0.9%) all retreated. Lithium stocks bore the sharpest selling pressure as

GFEX lithium carbonate futures in China fell -2.7% to CNY90,800/t — the second consecutive sharp daily decline in the contract — and a new low in the current destocking selloff. Elevra Lithium (ELV) (-9.4%) and Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (-8.0%) led the falls, with Develop Global (DVP) (-6.2%), Liontown Resources (LTR) (-5.0%), and Core Lithium (CXO) (-4.3%) also lower.

Analysis

There is a Wednesday candle there. You just need to zoom in, then squint a little. 🧐

It's decent, too.

Diminutive... but robust! 💪

The downward pointing shadow shows some BTD... and the fact that the candle is so small suggests very little supply side motivation in the market at the moment (surprisingly little given some of the risk factors out there).

The close roughly near the high suggests sustained demand interest and again, with little supply in the way. Although, the diminutive scale of the candle also suggests subdued demand side motivation, too... it's not exactly FOMO!

Volume about average. A bit of a snoozefest! 😴

The short term trend ribbon remains the key level. Interestingly, that's where the run stopped last night.

So, ditto yesterday's analysis, I want to see how the price action plays out there before considering a move back to 2/3RP.

Russell_2000_Index_(RUT)_chart_28 Oct.png
Russell 2000 chart

The RUT put in a similar, diminutive but robust performance! 🤏

View

I am 1/2RP on US stocks (RP = Risk Position – it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26779 is the closest key point of supply, but the short term trend ribbon will also likely act as a dynamic zone of supply (presently 26595–26610). 25803-26023 is the closest key zone of demand.

Analysis

Mostly made up for yesterday's post-CPI fade out. The financials intraday chart says it all... it's so good, I must show it again! 🤦

S&P/ASX 200 Financials Sector Index (XFJ) intraday chart

Sure, the XMJ chart was the exact opposite... but as the banks go, the OTP generally goes...

As I said in yesterday's webinar (link below 👇), we try not to think about it too much these days. Life's too short and it will bend your brain!

It's the OTP. It just is... accept it, and get on with it! 😉

View

I am 1/2RP on Australian shares (i.e., 50% cash vs 50% invested, with some of the invested portion allocated to shorts).

Key Levels

8935-8940 is the closest zone of supply vs 8613-8641 is the critical zone of demand.
