The ASX 200 fell as overnight oil's 7% surge reignited inflation concerns and drove benchmark US bond yields to a 19-year high, hammering gold stocks and base metals even as gold futures themselves rose. Technology was the sole sector to finish in the green, led by a surge in WiseTech Global (WTC).

Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 70.9 points lower at 8,967.7, 0.8% from its session high and 0.2% from its low. As if to rub our noses in it, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers lagged decliners by a pathetic 53 to 231. 🤦

Information Technology (XIJ) (+0.9%) was today's big curiosity. US tech stocks had a terrible night — the Dow fell 2.2% and the S&P 500 1.5% amid concern about the Fed's decision to hold rates as long-end bond yields climbed to a 19-year high — yet local tech was the session's best-performing sector. WiseTech Global (WTC) (+6.7%) led without any news catalyst. Xero (XRO) (+1.4%), Dicker Data (DDR) (+1.4%), and Technology One (TNE) (+1.1%) were also firmer.

Energy (XEJ) (+0.3%) was the other best sector, but its gain made sense — ICE Brent crude futures surged 7.3% overnight before adding a further 0.5% to US$88.53/bbl in Asian trade, as US strikes in Iran reinforced supply disruption fears. Viva Energy (VEA) (+2.2%), Santos (STO) (+0.8%), Woodside Energy (WDS) (+0.5%), and Karoon Energy (KAR) (+0.3%) all advanced.

Financials (XFJ) (-0.4%) were down but reprised their now-familiar role of steadying the index. As capital left gold and materials, it found its way — in part — into the sector's largest and most liquid names. National Australia Bank (NAB) (+0.9%) — which separately disclosed total Australian home lending applications were down 15% in the June quarter — and Westpac (WBC) (+0.6%) both gained, buffering against declines from ANZ (ANZ) (-0.6%) and Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (-0.2%).

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (-3.6%) delivered the another striking disconnect — COMEX gold futures gained 1.6% to US$4,101.60/oz in Asian trade, yet gold equities were savaged. The explanation likely lies in the oil price: a 7% overnight crude surge raises diesel costs for mining operations with immediate and material effect, compressing the operating margins of gold producers even when the revenue line is rising.

When the cost increase runs faster than the commodity price improvement, equities sell regardless of where the spot price sits. West African Resources (WAF) (-6.6%), Predictive Discovery (PDI) (-5.9%), Genesis Minerals (GMD) (-5.7%), Catalyst Metals (CYL) (-5.7%), and Resolute Mining (RSG) (-7.2%) were all sharply lower.

Iron Ore 62% (Front month, back-adjusted) SGX chart_30 Jul.png
Iron Ore 62% (Front month, back-adjusted) SGX chart

Materials (XMJ) (-1.6%) was caught in two simultaneous headwinds — the same diesel cost pressure as gold stocks, and a fresh leg lower in iron ore demand expectations. SGX iron ore futures dropped 2.8% to US$95.10/t, their lowest level since late May, as Chinese demand signals continued to deteriorate. Champion Iron (CIA) (-8.8%) bore the heaviest iron ore losses, with Fortescue (FMG) (-1.2%) and BHP (BHP) (-1.7%) also lower.

COMEX copper futures gained 1.1% to US$6.381/lb — a positive lead that failed to translate into equity gains for copper-exposed names like Capstone Copper (CSC) (-1.1%), and South32 (S32) (-0.9%) further evidence that the diesel-cost margin squeeze was the dominant market concern today. Rio Tinto (RIO) (+1.8%) was the sector's standout exception, rising after Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to buy.

_lithium_carbonate_futures_Sep-26_GFEX_30 Jul.png
Lithium Carbonate Futures (Benchmark month, back-adjusted) GFEX chart

In other commodities moves, GFEX lithium carbonate futures in China fell 4.6% to CNY 141,060/t in the Asian session — the largest single-session decline in three weeks. Liontown Resources (LTR) (-10.9%), Core Lithium (CXO) (-6.3%), Elevra Lithium (ELV) (-5.2%) were hit hard, but Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (+2.7%) and Mineral Resources (MIN) (+3.9%) were the conspicuous exceptions, both buoyed by favourable operational updates — PLS today, MIN yesterday.

Arafura Rare Earths (ARU) (-7.9%), Iluka Resources (ILU) (-4.2%), and Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (-2.1%) all fell heavily as NdPr rare earth prices in China eased 0.6% to CNY 745,500/t.

Analysis

I don’t need to tell you how to read a chart*. Particularly not one as clear-cut in terms of trends, price action, and candles as the one above. 👆

It's Crunch time.

This is it.

Put up or shut up for the Comp bull market.

Things look like they're about to get very spicy and very interesting. 🌶️

But not so much for those who use the ChartWatch Portfolio Management Model… We're moving from 1/2RP (i.e., a whopping 50% cash) to 1/3RP (i.e., 67% cash 🤯).

Wow... Aren't markets BORING*!

(*Well, if I've done my job right up to this point — they should be! 😉)

View

I am moving from 1/2RP to 1/3RP on my US portfolio ⚖️ (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs long term uptrend ribbon (presently 23659 - 24548) is the key zone of demand.

Analysis

Oh OTP. You've done it again 😭.

Or is it me?

Did I do it? 🤔

As soon as I utter the phrase: Golden Le Creuset...

BOOM! 👊💥

Did it 17 June.

Did it on 25 Feb (refer ChartWatch here).

I'm 3 from 3 this year.

(Big sigh 😔). Not a great look: today's candle blended with yesterday's candle = long upward pointing shadow.

But, it's just one bad day. The ST + LT trends, price action, and candles (otherwise) remain indicative of demand side control. 🤞

I require confirmation of today's supply side showing to believe otherwise. So, status quo for now.

One thing that is ringing in my mind, however, is something I said in yesterday's Webinar at 12:45.

That's probably a good thing for us... Up to a point...

Did it take just one day to go from "what's bad for hot markets is good for the OTP" to "past that point"!? 🤦

I hope not... But it's probably fair to say that you can't just paint an Old Tin Pot yellow and call it a GLC! 😉

View

I'm 2/3RP on my Aussie portfolio ⚖️ (i.e., my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in Australian stocks is 67%).

Key Levels

8984-9022 is the key zone of supply, while demand is at 8708-8656.

(Glossary of acronyms! Old Tin Pot (OTP): S&P/ASX 200 | MOTN: More Often Than Not | FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out | HOFU: Holding On For Upside | BTD: Buy The Dip | NUTE: No Urgency To Enter | FOHO: Fear Of Holding On | STR: Sell The Rally | RP: Risk Position | FFS: Fund Flow Shenanigans!)
