What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Gold stocks break out: Gold mining stocks staged a remarkable recovery in late October, erasing their earlier 12% year-to-date underperformance relative to physical gold (which was up ~27%). While miners initially lagged due to operational challenges, rising costs, and weather-related risks, the sector rallied broadly in the second half of the month. Genesis Minerals, despite being the most heavily shorted gold stock, led the surge alongside Northern Star.

  • Asset managers trend higher: The bullish equity market backdrop and ongoing structural shifts in the Australian wealth management platform landscape has created significant tailwinds for fund managers and investment platforms. A leading name like Pinnacle Investment Management has finished higher 22 of the last 27 weeks.

  • Staples soften: Several key consumer staples stocks have hit 52-week lows, including Inghams (poultry), Metcash (food, hardware, and liquor), and Endeavour Group (liquor and hotels). Metcash recently projected its 1H25 underlying NPAT at $132-135 million –11% below Macquarie's forecast – citing weakened retail performance in its hardware division due to ongoing housing market softness.
