Mentioned

Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that hit fresh yearly highs and lows last week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to meaningful underlying drivers such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • REITs in deep water. The S&P/ASX 200 Real Estate index capped off a volatile week, with a 3.6% rally on Wednesday more than offset by a 4.0% decline across Thursday and Friday. The index finished the week at its lowest since January 2024 and is down 19.5% year-to-date. The RBA hiked rates by 25 bps to 4.60% on Wednesday, its fourth hike of the year, taking the cash rate to its highest since 2011. However, the Australian 10-year bond yield settled the week 7 bps lower at 5.31%, a two-week low. The number of real estate stocks hitting 52-week lows has been climbing steadily over recent months, from 4 in late August to 8 the week before and 11 last week.

  • Breadth is very weak. The ASX 200 is down just 0.3% year-to-date and 6.3% below its 6 August record high, yet 30 constituents, or 15% of the index, tagged a fresh 52-week low last week. Real estate accounts for the biggest share (11 of the 30), but the lows also spread across fund administrators (Hub24, Netwealth), uranium, industrials, lithium, classifieds and software. This isn't exactly a sign of a healthy market. Participation is poor, more stocks and sectors are trading in the opposite direction, and the market continues to be buoyed by a handful of heavyweight stocks and sectors.

  • Trading updates and reporting season winners. Only 5 ASX 200 stocks hit a fresh 52-week high last week, and one of them, Reliance, is currently under offer (Reliance's board is backing Brookfield Asset Management's $4.75 cash per share offer). Two others, Codan and Data#3, rallied aggressively after better-than-expected trading updates. Ansell is a reminder of why investors shouldn't shy away from buying stocks that report better-than-expected earnings. Shares rallied 9.5% on 24 August after FY26 numbers came in broadly ahead of consensus (EPS up 18% to 148.6 US cents, or 3% ahead of ests) and FY27 EPS guidance of 158–170 US cents landed in line with Macquarie ests at the midpoint, before buybacks. The stock has added another 17% since the result.
