Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that hit fresh yearly highs and lows last week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.
When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to meaningful underlying drivers such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?
Breadth remains weak. The ASX 200 is trading fractionally lower year-to-date and sits around 6% below its 5 August record high. Beneath the surface, rate-sensitive sectors are deteriorating, notably discretionary and real estate, while select industrials, mostly companies facing a moderation in growth, are tumbling to fresh yearly lows. The backdrop isn't helping. The RBA is widely expected to lift the cash rate 25bp to 4.6% tomorrow, its fourth hike this year and the highest level since November 2011, and the latest Westpac-Melbourne Institute survey showed consumer sentiment falling 5.2% to 84.4 in September, with all sub-indexes in pessimistic territory and well below long-run averages. Real estate stocks are facing persistent downward pressure as the Australian 10-year yield has climbed 320 bp in the past month to 5.41%, its highest since March 2011. Fresh cracks in private credit are adding to the pressure, with Metrics Master Income Trust, Metrics Income Opportunities Trust and Metrics Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund all halted today after flagging that their audited FY26 accounts will materially differ from preliminary results.
Reporting season still matters. There's lingering momentum off the back of August reporting season, with names like Codan, AMP and Ansell grinding higher and all up massively year-to-date, while Worley and SGH continue moving the other way. Key numbers from the results:
Codan (20-Aug) FY26: Beat across the board, with NPAT up 69% to $175.2m (3% beat) on 30% revenue growth, and FY27 revenue guided up ~20% to roughly $1,050m, or 9% above Macquarie expectations. The stock surged 12.4% on the day to record highs.
AMP (06-Aug) 1H26: Underlying NPAT up 33% to $174m (in line), with a 3c interim dividend (vs 2c ests) and a further $150m buyback, helped by platforms cashflows up 33% and the China partnerships contribution more than doubling to $56m.
Worley (26-Aug) FY26: Underlying NPATA down 16.8% to $395m on a 2% revenue beat, but FY27 guidance for mid-to-high single digit revenue and EBITA growth landed well short of UBS's 15%/19%, a material miss, with backlog stepping down to $13.8bn from $16.7bn at the half.
SGH (11-Aug) FY26: Small misses across the board, with underlying NPAT flat at $920m (3% miss) and EBIT up 1% to $1.55bn, plus a $500m buyback and 64c full-year dividend, though FY27 guidance of flat to low single-digit EBIT growth sits below consensus.
