The ASX 200 surged to its best session in six weeks as the US paused strikes against Iran for the first time in 13 days, sending Brent crude plunging nearly 10% and releasing a handbrake that had been tightening across equities, bonds, and currencies for most of July. The playbook ran in near-perfect reverse — whatever had been sold hardest through the oil surge bounced the most today.

ASX 200 Intraday Chart

Markets
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 121.7 points higher at 8,894.0, 1.4% from its session low and smack–bang on its session high. Reflecting the positivity at benchmark level, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by an impressive 232 to 52.
Information Technology (XIJ) (+4.5%) delivered the session's biggest sectoral rebound and the logic is clean — high-P/E, long-duration growth stocks are the assets most acutely sensitive to benchmark bond yields, and oil's 10% two-day collapse removed the inflation premium that had been forcing yields higher. Lower yields mean lower discount rates applied to future earnings, which mechanically lifts the present value of technology stocks with earnings weighted far into the future.

ASX 200 Information Technology (XIJ) intraday chart
WiseTech Global (WTC) (+7.0%), Xero (XRO) (+6.0%), Technology One (TNE) (+5.8%), and Life360 (360) (+5.5%) all surged in a reversal that recouped a meaningful portion of the past two weeks' losses.
The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+3.9%) recovered sharply for the same bond yield reason — plus an additional and direct benefit: lower diesel costs as oil retreats are one of the largest input cost improvements a gold miner can receive. COMEX gold futures gained 0.5% to US$4,089/oz and COMEX silver futures gained 1.1% to US$59.55/oz.
Ora Banda Mining (OBM) (+6.7%), Pantoro Gold (PNR) (+6.5%), Westgold Resources (WGX) (+6.1%), and Catalyst Metals (CYL) (+6.0%) led the recovery. Evolution Mining (EVN) (+2.0%) separately agreed to acquire Carnaby Resources in a $213 million scrip deal, adding the Greater Duchess copper-gold project in Queensland to its portfolio — Carnaby Resources (CNB) (+57.3%) surged on the news.
%20intraday%20chart_27%20Jul.png)
ASX 200 Materials (XMJ) intraday chart
Materials (XMJ) (+2.4%) tracked the same logic — mining sector input costs fall when oil falls, since diesel is among the largest operating expenses for most extraction operations. COMEX copper futures eased just 0.1% to US$6.352/lb and SGX iron ore futures were also flat at US$98.00/t, meaning the commodity price leads were minimal.
The equity gains ran well ahead of underlying price moves — a classic short-covering and positioning reversal after weeks of relentless selling. Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+3.9%), Capstone Copper (CSC) (+3.2%), Rio Tinto (RIO) (+2.2%), and BHP (BHP) (+2.1%) all advanced.
Real Estate (XPJ) (+1.7%) and Health Care (XHJ) (+1.4%) were the other notable best-sector performers. Both are bond-proxy or long-duration sectors that benefit from falling yields — the XPJ through improved relative income appeal as risk-free rates fall, and XHJ through lower discount rates applied to premium healthcare multiples. Lendlease (LLC) (+3.2%), Goodman Group (GMG) (+3.2%) — noting HMC Capital's +3.6% among the broader real estate-adjacent financials — and 4DMedical (4DX) (+5.5%), Cochlear (COH) (+2.6%), ResMed (RMD) (+2.1%), and CSL (CSL) (+1.9%) all recovered ground lost through July's yield surge.
%20intraday%20chart_27%20Jul%20-%20Copy.png)
ASX 200 Financial XFJ) intraday chart
Financials (XFJ) (+1.2%) participated in the rally but lagged the pace of the more yield-sensitive sectors — the major banks benefit from lower rates as they reduce near-term credit quality concerns, but the effect is less mechanical than on bond proxies or growth stocks. National Australia Bank (NAB) (+1.4%), Westpac (WBC) (+1.5%), ANZ (ANZ) (+1.2%), and Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (+1.2%) all gained. Perpetual (PPT) (+3.1%) was lifted by EQT Partners increasing its takeover proposal to $22.50 per share, valuing the business at approximately $2.65 billion.
%20intraday%20chart_27%20Jul%20-%20Copy.png)
ASX 200 Energy (XEJ) intraday chart
Energy (XEJ) (-3.0%) was, unavoidably, the session's worst performer — the oil price mechanism that had made the sector one of the only winners through July's volatility reversed with equivalent brutality. ICE Brent crude futures fell 9.6% to US$87.45/bbl after having already declined 4.1% on Friday — a two-day fall of more than 13% from recent highs. Karoon Energy (KAR) (-7.8%) bore the heaviest losses, with Yancoal Australia (YAL) (-4.8%), Beach Energy (BPT) (-3.9%), New Hope Corp. (NHC) (-3.8%), and Santos (STO) (-3.6%) all retreating sharply. Santos separately marked the export of the first condensate cargo from its Barossa gas project — a positive operational milestone — though it did little to offset the sector's oil price headwind.
Lithium stocks rebounded alongside the broader mining rally, with GFEX lithium carbonate futures gaining 1.1% to CNY 145,860/t. Core Lithium (CXO) (+6.3%), Liontown Resources (LTR) (+3.4%), IGO (IGO) (+2.9%), Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (+2.7%), and Mineral Resources (MIN) (+2.2%) all advanced. Rare earths stocks also firmed — NdPr in China rose 1.0% to CNY 765,000/t, with Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+0.5%) edging higher after separately signing binding agreements with South Korea's LS Eco Energy for mutual ~$29 million convertible instrument investments.

Analysis
Not a great looking chart. Even if this is your first ChartWatch, it should be clear that the bit at the end is hardly soaring towards the top-right-most corner of the chart.
But, it's still thereabouts...
And the long term uptrend ribbon is about to come into calculations (i.e., potential for some long term positional demand kicking in to buy the dip / Plunge Protection Team doing what they're good at)...
And Comp futures are trading 300-odd points higher on the back of some 'good' (better / not as bad?) news coming out of the US-Iran shemozzle...
So let's give it another candle before we decide to move from the current 1/2RP to the highest risk-averse setting my model possesses: 1/3RP. ⚠️🚨😱
I'm not sure what more 'analysis' you require from me with respect to this chart... If I've done my job properly, you should be more than capable of drawing your own conclusions from the trends, price action, candles, and volume/volatility indicators.
It kinda just is. And that's the way it should be! (😉 i.e., just routine: Analyse, Accept and Act sort of stuff! Nobody losing their heads, nobody panicking, nobody wondering what to do now... Just get on with follow trend + manage risk ✅✅ Oh, it's excitement you want? 🤔 In a nod to one of the most exciting Tours de France in 20 years (we can't talk about those ones!) — see below what you might want to do for some excitement instead of trading! 🚴💨)

I'm 1/2RP on my US portfolio ⚖️ (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%)
Key Levels
26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs 24980-25015 is the key zone of demand. In between = 1/2RP vs >= FRP and <= 1/3RP.

Analysis
BOOM! 💥🚀
Is this the broad-based BIG move UP we've been waiting for? 🙏
It's easy to forget just how awful the OTP looked, um, well... All of one trading session ago! 🤦
Such is the nature of the current CHOPPY market (whose candles resemble a herd of zebras... Or a barcode, if you prefer!).
But there is plenty to like about the OTP's chart:
ST/LT trend = ⬆️/⬆️
Price action = Rising peaks / troughs (albeit super-overlappy!) 📈
Candles = 🦓
Volume = Yeah, okay, a bit pathetic!
Okay, perhaps plenty is a stretch, but there's some good stuff there!
Can I add: The long term uptrend ribbon + the 8708-8656 demand zone have been ABSOLUTELY ROCK SOLID in preventing some scary downward pushes from succeeding. "You shall not pass!!!" 🧙♂️
Call it juicing at its finest... Call it the Aussie PPT... Either way, in my experience: if something can't go down... It will probably go up.
Yet, while my gut is saying: It's on again = LOAD UP 🤞. My head is saying: Easy there tiger... There's still plenty of work to do — plenty of potential latent supply to clear around 8984-9022... Let's just see how at least a few candles fall there first, before we make any rash decisions on portfolio risk.
After all, at 50-50 invested-to-cash, we're pretty darn balanced for anything that happens next! 💪
