A record for the ASX today that even the other Evening Wraps will report on! 😉 More news of a US-Iran peace deal — and an overnight plunge in oil — sent gold stocks to their best single session since March, and mining stocks to a near four-year high. Tech was also solid, but the rest... A tad disappointing!

Be sure to click/scroll through for the usual reporting of the major sector and stock-specific moves, the broker responses to them, as well as all the key economic data in tonight's Evening Wrap. Also, I have detailed technical analysis on the Nasdaq Composite and the S&P/ASX 200 in today's ChartWatch.

Let’s dive in!

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 82.0 points higher at 9,227.8, 0.98% from its session low and just 0.02% from its low. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by a convincing 209 to 68.

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+6.4%) delivered the session's most dramatic result — its best single-session performance since March — as a significant overnight decline in oil eased inflation expectations, pulled benchmark bond yields lower, and made the case for gold's position in a portfolio stronger simultaneously.

The mechanism is by now well explained and well worn here! Lower oil means lower inflation pressure, which means lower expected interest rates, which means a lower opportunity cost for holding non-yielding gold. Add in the direct cost benefit — diesel is a primary mining input — and gold producers receive a double-barrelled boost. St Barbara (SBM) (+10.3%), Ora Banda Mining (OBM) (+8.7%), Predictive Discovery (PDI) (+8.4%), and Genesis Minerals (GMD) (+8.2%) all surged.

US 10-Year T-Bond Yield chart_4 Aug.png
US 10-Year T-Bond Yield chart

Materials (XMJ) (+3.6%) was the index's second engine room and, like the XGD, shares the two-sided benefit of lower oil — revenue side supported by precious and base metals recovering, cost side supported by diesel falling. The sector's proximity to the AI infrastructure narrative also helped: copper's role in data centre construction kept base metals names in favour.

South32 (S32) (+4.3%), Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+3.8%), BHP (BHP) (+3.3%) — which separately awarded a $200 million car dumper contract to Monadelphous — and Rio Tinto (RIO) (+2.3%) all posted strong gains. IperionX (IPX) (+12.1%) recovered sharply after a sell-off earlier in the week following reports of its Texas parent company relocation plans.

Information Technology (XIJ) (+2.5%) tracked substantial gains in the US Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which surged 6.6% amid renewed AI trade optimism, even as SpaceX shares fell in after-hours trading following an AI capex disclosure in its debut earnings result. Appen (APX) (+9.1%) was the standout, with WiseTech Global (WTC) (+5.4%), Siteminder (SDR) (+4.5%), and Life360 (360) (+3.8%) also advancing. Light & Wonder (LNW) (+4.0%) surged after posting better-than-expected quarterly earnings. Neuren Pharmaceuticals (NEU) (+17.3%) was the session's most dramatic individual mover in the broader market, though covered separately below.

But it wasn't all winners on a record setting day...

Energy (XEJ) (-2.2%) was the session's most consequential loser in index terms — the interim US-Iran deal continues to drain the geopolitical premium from crude. The spot price of Brent crude was trading around US$76/bbl, down sharply from the July highs above US$100. Woodside Energy (WDS) (-3.6%), Karoon Energy (KAR) (-2.9%), Beach Energy (BPT) (-2.7%), and Santos (STO) (-2.2%) all fell.

Utilities (XUJ) (-1.6%) was the sector that bore the most consequential secondary damage — most of the sector held up, but Origin Energy (ORG) (-2.0%) has such substantial LNG production exposure that it tracks the energy sector as much as utilities, and its decline dragged the sector meaningfully lower. AGL Energy (AGL) (-1.4%) and APA Group (APA) (-1.2%) were also softer as defensive-oriented flows found fewer buyers.

On the topic of defensives, when there's so much appetite for risk, they're almost certainly going to take a back seat. Financials (XFJ) (-0.4%) gave back ground — the rotation is by now a familiar pattern: as capital rushes to growth and mining sectors, the banks get trimmed. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (-1.4%) was the heaviest bank drag, but commodity price volatility winner Macquarie Group (MQG) (+1.5%) was the clear exception.

Endeavour Group (EDV) (-1.4%) fell in a weaker Consumer Staples (XSJ) (-0.3%) sector after preliminary results showed $311 million in significant items dragging full-year profit down 14.7%.

Analysis

What did I say yesterday?

Something about 'sublime'?

What superlative sits above sublime?

I'll let you and ChatGPT figure that out! 😉

Whatever you both decide upon, apply it to the Comp chart above.

You are seeing something special long suffering ChartWatch readers, something that happens seldom, not regularly. Total unbridled fear. 😱

No, not fear of: "Oh, I can't buy that now, it's gone up far too much."

Rather: "Oh, if I don't buy that now, I'm gonna underperform the benchmark and I won't get my monthly/quarterly/annual bonus!"

I'm not saying there aren't a few of the first group — there always are. Simply, that the second group is in control of the market.

I like to think that we have the sensibility of the first group, but that we're also prepared to back the second... As long as they are in control of price, that is!

FOMO + HOFU + BTD = MOTN P ⬆️

Because we know that when the demand side's control fades, and then trends, price action, candles, volume and volatility begin to collectively demonstrate: NUTE + FOHO + STR = MOTN ⬇️ — we have a clear-cut (you could say 'black and white') methodology to manage our risk.

It's panic buying at the moment. Sheer, unbridled animal spirits. I love it! But, I note that 26789-27191 isn't far away. It will be the first big test of this new phase of the Comp's bull market.

Through it, and we could be set for another leg up. Fail, with long black-bodied candles and or long upward pointing shadows — and we may need to temper our current enthusiasm!

View

I am 2/3RP on US stocks. (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs 24425 is the key point of demand.

Analysis

OTP, they said you'd never make it (well, Carl said you wouldn't), but you FINALLY came through! A truly GOLDEN performance today! 🥳🍾

I'll be having a Swan in your honour this evening OTP!

A couple of wobbles there early, some supply from the non-believers… But they were CONSUMED very quickly by the prevailing excess demand in the system — and once that pocket of motivated supply was gone — look what was left in the system:

Steady buying, no doubt algorithmic buy orders from the big funds, bona fide PYPIYNI buying! (You’ll have to check yesterday’s ChartWatch for the definition of that acronym! 😉)

ASX 200 (XJO) intraday chart_5 Aug.png
ASX 200 Intraday Chart

Hey, I don’t use my acronyms flippantly! Hopefully they’ve become integral to your understanding of markets. 🤓

FOMO = Fear of missing out. Fear of not being invested, or underinvested. For the big fund managers, this is the fear of underperforming the benchmark ( = NO BONUS! 😭)

HOFU = Holding on for upside. I don’t care how much you’re offering me… I’m not selling here… I think I’ll get more!

BTD = Buy the dip. Nothing goes up in a straight line. Look at today’s intraday chart — early dip. But the smart money knows the best time to buy is those dips because it’s in the dips that they get the liquidity they so desperately require.

At some point though, the fundamentals may shift to alter the above market characteristics. But any change MUST manifest in my trend ribbons, in the candles, in the price action, and in the volume and volatility. 🔍

Today was another demonstration of the growing imbalance between demand and supply for Aussie shares. It confirms my current FRP stance.

So, that’s it for another candle: Analyse, Accept, Act ✅✅✅.

Doubts and confusion are for fundamental analysts (Oh, but the valuations… But the economy… But in the past the market did this and crashed… Blah, Blah, Blah-de-blah blah! 🙉)

Us: D > S = P ⬆️ + Let’s see what the next candle brings! 💪

View

I am FRP on Aussie stocks. (My personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in ASX stocks is now 100%).

Key Levels

9201 is the key point of supply, while demand is at 8940 and then at the short term uptrend ribbon (presently 8861-8902).

(Glossary of acronyms! Old Tin Pot (OTP): S&P/ASX 200 | MOTN: More Often Than Not | FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out | HOFU: Holding On For Upside | BTD: Buy The Dip | NUTE: No Urgency To Enter | FOHO: Fear Of Holding On | STR: Sell The Rally | RP: Risk Position | FFS: Fund Flow Shenanigans!)
