What Does the Data Tell Us?
The commodity bull market continues. The S&P/ASX 200 Materials Index rallied as much as 3.0% last week to fresh all-time highs before experiencing a sharp 2.1% pullback on Friday. The sector has been running hot for some time, broadening beyond gold in recent months to include rare earths and copper, while beaten-down sectors like lithium show signs of bottoming.
Financials remain solid: The financials sector is looking as strong as ever, with Westpac, NAB and ANZ breaking out to multi-year, if not record highs.
Reporting season losers starting to bottom: A few weeks ago, eight of the nine stocks making fresh yearly lows were all reporting season casualties: ING, SHL, EBO, CSL, IPH, BAP, DMP and REH. These stocks fell an average of 18.8% on their FY25 results day and slipped a further 9.2% in the following weeks (from reporting date through 23 September). Most are now finally showing signs of stabilising.
