Welcome back to the Short Seller Series – A recap of the most heavily shorted stocks on the ASX and those experiencing significant changes to short interest over the past week.

Short selling data is four days behind today's date because reporting is not mandatory until three business days after the trade. The tables below will compare:

  • Week-on-week changes between 7 and 14 September 2026

  • Month-on-month changes between 17 August and 14 September 2026

  • Most covered and rising short tables record week-on-week changes of ~0.5% or more

Most Shorted

A few heavily shorted names keep drawing more attention. Lotus is pushing back towards the record 22% short interest it hit in late July, while IperionX has climbed to record levels as the stock hits a one-and-a-half year low, down more than 50% since early June.

Rising Shorts

NextDC's short interest is back at record levels after dipping to around 8% in recent weeks. The company recently finalised a $1.1 billion subordinated convertible notes offering, securing more liquidity to fund its surging FY27 capex. Despite the tailwinds for contracted utilisation, the stock has been dropping like a rock, down 25% since 13 August and close to its lowest since April 2025. Elsewhere, shorts are building in speculative resource names and those still in development or ramp-up, including , Lotus Resources, Arafura Rare Earths and Elevra Lithium.

Short sellers are taking profits across several battered names, including Zip (down 31% between 20 August and 11 September), Corporate Travel (down 85% on 3 September after a 13-month suspension) and JB Hi-Fi (down 17% since its FY26 result on 14 August). Bapcor has gone the other way and squeezed the life out of the shorts, surging around 75% since its FY26 result on 26 August, though the stock is still down 52% year-to-date.
