Mentioned

Welcome back to the Short Seller Series – A recap of the most heavily shorted stocks on the ASX and those experiencing significant changes to short interest over the past week.

Short selling data is four days behind today's date because reporting is not mandatory until three business days after the trade. The tables below will compare:

  • Week-on-week changes between 20 and 28 April 2026

  • Month-on-month changes between 10 March and 28 April 2026

  • Most covered and rising short tables record week-on-week changes of ~0.5% or more

Most Shorted

No major changes among the most shorted stocks. Guzman Y Gomez experienced a slight pullback, likely driven by a ~36% rally between 2-10 April after the company reported Australian Q3 comparable sales growth of 6.6% (vs. 5.1% est.) and reaffirmed its FY26 guidance. It'll be interesting to see how short interest evolves for Lotus Resources, which has been aggressively shorted all year. The stock suffered a 34% one-day decline on 30 April after it retracted previously reported mined grade, milled grade and recovery figures from its December 2025 quarter and earlier announcements, due to identified inconsistencies in laboratory sampling and assaying processes at Kayelekera.

Rising Shorts

Short interest in Generation Development Group has soared in recent months, from ~4% in late March to 9.40%. The stock suffered a 22.6% one-day selloff on 22 April, likely on the back of a quarterly update flagged as non-price sensitive, which showed $34.8 billion in funds under management at the end of the March quarter, up just 0.8% from the prior quarter. Other stocks and themes attracting short interest include gold (PDI, WAF), earnings downgrades (BAP, WOR), retail (BAP, MYR, UNI) and tech (4DX, CAR, DGT).
