Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 40.2 points higher at 8,850.1, 0.9% from its session low and just 0.1% from its high. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by a modest 161 to 126.

Materials (XMJ) (+2.8%) posted its second straight broad-based gain as investors continued rotating into miners, with September quarterly results showing that while costs have risen, the feared blowouts haven’t materialised — reinforcing the case for the sector. Benchmark iron ore futures fell -1.1% to US$89.70/t in the Asian session to a two-year low on weaker demand and rising supply, but it didn’t deter buyers. Base, precious and rare earths prices were mixed at best over the last 24-hours — today's move was not about commodity price fundamentals...

BHP (BHP) (+4.3%) led the large caps, with Rio Tinto (RIO) (+2.5%) and South32 (S32) (+2.6%) — the latter boosted by a Chevron gas supply deal for its Worsley Alumina operations — also advancing strongly. Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+3.5%) and Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+2.3%) added further weight.

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+1.5%) extended its rebound for a second session, carried by the same fund-flow rotation, even as COMEX benchmark gold futures eased -0.4% to US$4,022.20/oz in the Asian session. Ramelius Resources (RMS) (+4.5%) was the standout mover, alongside Ora Banda Mining (OBM) (+3.0%) and Northern Star Resources (NST) (+2.1%).

Real Estate (XPJ) (+0.8%) firmed as easing bond yields supported the sector, with a strong trading update from Cedar Woods Properties (CWP) (+2.8%) adding a specific catalyst. Goodman Group (GMG) (+3.2%) was the heavyweight contributor to the sector’s gain.

Energy (XEJ) (+0.6%) caught the broader resources rotation bid even as energy commodity prices were mixed — ICE benchmark Brent crude oil futures eased -0.7% to US$110/bbl in the Asian session. In coal, SGX Australian Premium Coking Coal futures edged +0.3% higher to US$262.25/t but globalCoal Newcastle Coal futures eased -0.4% to US$157.70/t.

Uranium stocks were the sector’s standout performers, with Boss Energy (BOE) (+6.7%), Paladin Energy (PDN) (+6.7%), Bannerman Energy (BMN) (+6.3%), and Deep Yellow (DYL) (+5.7%) all surging. Coal stocks also advanced, as Yancoal Australia (YAL) (+1.6%) and Whitehaven Coal (WHC) (+1.4%) both gained.

Financials (XFJ) (-0.6%) bore the brunt of the rotation out of defensives for a second consecutive session. Bank of Queensland (BOQ) (-2.8%) led the falls, with National Australia Bank (NAB) (-1.7%), Westpac Banking Corp (WBC) (-1.0%), and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) (-0.7%) all lower.

S&P/ASX 200 Financials Sector Index (XFJ) intraday chart

Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) (-0.6%) continued to lag as concerns mount that higher interest rates and a slowing housing market will weigh on consumer spending. Cettire (CTT) (-6.5%) was the heaviest faller, followed by Myer (MYR) (-4.8%), Eagers Automotive (APE) (-4.7%), and ARB Corp (ARB) (-3.8%).

Utilities (XUJ) (-0.3%) gave back further ground as the defensive rotation continued to suck capital away from the sector. AGL Energy (AGL) (-1.0%) and Origin Energy (ORG) (-0.2%) were both lower.

Consumer Staples (XSJ) (-0.2%) also edged lower on the same anti-defence theme. The a2 Milk Company (A2M) (-2.7%) and Inghams Group (ING) (-1.9%) were the notable movers, with stalwart Coles Group (COL) (-0.8%) also lower.

Analysis

A small step in the right direction on the Comp on Monday:

  • Seems to be holding 25803-26023 ✅

  • Seems to be holding the long term trend ribbon (presently 24857–25721) ✅

  • Closed above the balance (mid-point) of Thursday’s strong supply side candle (i.e., 26169 vs 26139) ✅

But…

That upward pointing shadow confirm that the supply side remains active, and arguably, still in control of the Comp’s short term price.

Nothing has really changed here… ditto on previous analysis, below…

The Comp remains a long way from "clear cut demand side control". For that, I'd still need to see:

  • Close back above the short term trend ribbon + short term trend ribbon rising / green + short term trend ribbon demonstrating that its acting as a zone of dynamic demand

  • Rising peaks and rising troughs (i.e., evidence of HOFU = rising peaks + BTD = rising troughs)

  • Predominance of demand side candles (i.e., pervasive programmed buy orders and intraday BTD & HOFU)

Russell_2000_Index_(RUT)_chart_26 Oct.png
Russell 2000 chart

We haven't checked in on the RUT for a couple days. Even further from clear cut demand side control here! ⚠️

I am 1/2RP on US stocks (RP = Risk Position – it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26779 is the closest key point of supply, but the short term trend ribbon will also likely act as a dynamic zone of supply (presently 24857–25721). 25803-26023 is the closest key zone of demand.

Analysis

Anticipate.

React.

Trend following.

Strictly speaking, trend following requires “React” and prohibits “Anticipate”.

I.e., one checks the technicals to ascertain evidence of one of these states of the demand side market, and then acts accordingly:

  1. D > S = P ⬆️ corresponds with R ⬆️

  2. D = S = P ➡️ corresponds with R ⬇️

  3. S > D = P ⬇️ corresponds with R ⬇️

Is the chart above yet scenario 1? 🤔

That will depend on my / your interpretation of:

  • Short term trend: Short term trend ribbon is back to rising, price is back above the short term trend ribbon, and if I squint, it’s acting as a zone of dynamic demand.

  • Long term trend: Neutral, but price is back above the long term trend ribbon, and with a trough set in that combined orange zone, arguably also acting as a zone of dynamic demand.

  • Price action: This is clearer, rising peaks and rising troughs suggests BTD, plus at the peaks some FOMO and HOFU. Granted, they’re a bit “overlappy” / could be stronger showings of demand side control.

  • Candles: Also clear for me, since the 8613 low, quite consistently demand side in nature (i.e., white bodied and or downward pointing shadows). This is where the demand side is perhaps most influential – its ability to force the price higher by the end of the session.

  • Volatility / Volume: Benign, but several above average showings on solid candles suggest at least a moderate degree of demand entering and removing stubborn excess supply.

Let’s both acknowledge that you can convince yourself of pretty much anything if you try hard enough… and that instinct / gut feel also play are role – and a valid role in my experience.

Come on Carl… I hear you say, just get to the blood point… we know what you want to do…

Yes. You got me! Moving from 1/3RP to 1/2RP! (still ultra conservative vs the regular investment fund out there which typically maxes out at 10% cash in a global financial crisis… but substantially more balanced ⚖️)

The BIG QUESTION is whether I can find the risk to add. It's been slim pickings in ASX Scans... perhaps tonight's analysis / tomorrow's list will be different. 🧐
