The ASX 200 closed at a six-week high as RBA Governor Michele Bullock's lunchtime speech sparked a decisive repricing of August rate hike odds — her acknowledgement that housing and labour markets had softened more than expected sent the 10-year bond yield falling 5.2 basis points and unlocked broad-based buying across every rate-sensitive sector. Gold and base metals were the only casualties, tracking weaker commodity price leads in Asian trade.

ASX 200 Intraday Chart

Markets
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 53.8 points higher at 8,947.8, 1.0% from its session low and smack–bang on its session high. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by 172 to 113.
Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) (+2.7%) was the session's strongest sector — and it earned the top spot cleanly. When the market believes the rate tightening cycle has effectively peaked, the first and most direct beneficiaries are the businesses selling goods and services that households fund from income left over after mortgage and essential spending. Lower rates mean more discretionary income.
The Bullock speech was unusually direct: demand growth has moderated, housing has softened more than expected, labour market conditions have eased. Markets read it as the RBA growing quietly confident that the job may already be done.
Guzman Y Gomez (GYG) (+7.9%), Temple & Webster (TPW) (+7.2%), Lovisa (LOV) (+6.7%), and JB Hi-Fi (JBH) (+3.3%) all surged. Web Travel (WEB) (+17.1%) surged independently after announcing a $90 million share buyback and guiding first-half EBITDA to $80–86 million, well ahead of expectations. Harvey Norman (HVN) (+2.3%) also advanced — rising despite a $35 million Federal Court fine over a misleading advertising campaign with Latitude Financial.

ASX 200 Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) intraday chart
Communication Services (XTJ) (+2.6%) was the next major beneficiary, with online classified names — already highly correlated with domestic consumer confidence — responding to the rate repricing with conviction. Seek (SEK) (+6.8%), CAR Group (CAR) (+5.5%), and REA Group (REA) (+4.4%) were all strongly higher as their earnings multiples, which compress under rising rate expectations, found relief.
Health Care (XHJ) (+2.3%) caught the same lower yield tailwind — as the yield on the 10-year Australian government bond fell 5.2 basis points — the sector's long-duration earnings are more favourably priced. Cochlear (COH) (+4.7%), ResMed (RMD) (+3.4%), and CSL (CSL) (+2.7%) all advanced.
Information Technology (XIJ) (+1.2%) rallied for the same reason as healthcare — long-duration, high-P/E stocks benefit mechanically from falling risk-free rates. WiseTech Global (WTC) (+8.1%) led with its second strong consecutive session, followed by Xero (XRO) (+3.7%), Life360 (360) (+3.4%), and Technology One (TNE) (+3.3%). Interestingly, the sector's gains didn't seem to mind a brewing storm in the tech-heavy KOSPI in South Korea...

The KOSPI is about to knock your SOX off... !!!
Real Estate (XPJ) (+1.1%) is another textbook bond-proxy beneficiary — property trust income streams gain relative appeal when risk-free rates retreat. Stockland (SGP) (+2.7%), Dexus (DXS) (+2.4%), and GPT Group (GPT) (+2.2%) all firmed.
%20intraday%20chart_28%20Jul%20-%20Copy.png)
ASX 200 Financial XFJ) intraday chart
Financials (XFJ) (+0.9%) gained as the reduced probability of an August rate hike eased near-term credit quality concerns. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (+1.5%), AMP (AMP) (+1.4%), and QBE Insurance (QBE) (+1.3%) led. Westpac (WBC) (+0.9%), ANZ (ANZ) (+0.9%), and National Australia Bank (NAB) (+0.7%) were also firmer. Note another very nice pop in the closing price juicing session! ++XJO index points! 🧃💪
Materials (XMJ) (-1.4%) was the notable laggard. COMEX copper futures fell 0.8% to US$6.33/lb despite yesterday's strong bounce — the commodity is struggling to maintain gains above key technical support — and Sandfire Resources (SFR) (-4.2%), Capstone Copper (CSC) (-3.4%), Rio Tinto (RIO) (-2.5%), and BHP (BHP) (-1.2%) all retreated.
%20intraday%20chart_28%20Jul.png)
ASX 200 Materials (XMJ) intraday chart
The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (-1.5%) also missed the day's rally entirely, tracking weaker precious metals' price leads in Asian trade. COMEX gold futures fell 0.8% to US$4,045.50/oz and COMEX silver futures plunged 2.3% to US$57.41/oz. Kingsgate Consolidated (KCN) (-3.3%), Black Cat Syndicate (BC8) (-3.3%), Predictive Discovery (PDI) (-3.0%), and Newmont (NEM) (-2.9%) were all lower.
Lithium stocks surrendered yesterday's tentative recovery entirely as GFEX lithium carbonate futures fell 2.5% to CNY 143,560/t, returning to the lower end of their recent trading range. Core Lithium (CXO) (-5.9%), Elevra Lithium (ELV) (-5.4%), Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (-4.9%), and Vulcan Energy Resources (VUL) (-3.0%) were all lower. In other commodities moves, NdPr rare earth prices in China fell 1.3% to CNY 755,000/t in the Asian session.
Coal stocks fell on globalCoal Newcastle Coal futures declining 2.5% to US$135.60/t — Whitehaven Coal (WHC) (-4.6%), Yancoal Australia (YAL) (-1.6%), and New Hope Corp. (NHC) (-1.7%) were all lower.
Uranium stocks extended their multi-session retreat — Bannerman Energy (BMN) (-10.2%), Boss Energy (BOE) (-4.7%), and Paladin Energy (PDN) (-4.4%) all fell. Origin Energy (ORG) (-0.1%) was essentially flat after disclosing approximately 900,000 customers had been affected by last week's data breach.
Apart from coal and uranium, the rest of the Energy (XEJ) (+1.6%) sector advanced despite ICE Brent crude futures easing a further 0.5% to US$85.43/bbl. Viva Energy (VEA) (+8.6%) surged after forecasting first-half EBITDA of $770–780 million — more than double the $305 million a year earlier — driven by a sharp lift in regional refining margins following the Iran conflict. Woodside Energy (WDS) (+2.8%) and Santos (STO) (+1.2%) were also nicely higher.

Analysis
When I turned in for the evening last night, Comp futures were +475 points.
But as is our mantra here in ChartWatch:
How the candle starts is irrelevant — how it ends means everything.
And it didn’t end very well. Not a trainwreck, i.e., not a total supply-side-dominant performance due that modest downward pointing shadow — but far from delivering on the promise of that early futures lead.
Stuff that has changed since my last Comp update:
Short term trend ribbon is now 🟥 ⬇️
3 supply side candles in a row — flapping about at the bottom of the recent 24980-26789 trading range
Volatility ⬆️ and significant (see OTR)
Close below both the 24980 and 25015 points of demand (at 24932)
Stuff that hasn’t changed since my last Comp update:
Long term trend ribbon remains 🟩⬆️
Long term trend ribbon continues to act as a zone of dynamic demand
Volume is very low — neither party appears to be engaging with respect to size
I think we mash the new/old together, we can confidently say that the trends, price action, candles, volume and volatility suggest greater supply side control in the demand-supply environment for Comp stocks.
I’m ambivalent between a 1/2RP or 1/3RP — and I’m not sure if it matters too much right here… Active traders are likely already on the move there via natural attrition of long positions, reduced new long setups appearing, and the increasing presentation of strong short setups.
As for the official call to move, I just require one supply side candle that closes sufficiently close to its low to indicate that we’re done and dusted.
For now.
Because I doubt the Comp bull market is over. Hey, it could be, whatever, we’re appropriately placed and we’ll deal with it if that occurs — simply, like olives and pits — it is in the nature of the Comp to rise in a bull market! 🫒
(You Know Who’s Plunge Protection Team is no doubt about to get tapped! 🚀)

I'm 1/2RP on my US portfolio ⚖️ (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%)
Key Levels
26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs long term uptrend ribbon (presently 23642 - 24545) is the key zone of demand.

To all other global stock markets: What’s all the panic about? 🤷
Oh, you don’t have our BIG, FAT, JUICED-UP banks?
Well, as my teenagers would say: Sucks to be you!
Looking at that KOSPI move (chart in Markets section above), one can't help but think there's a bit of HOT money that wants to sit somewhere COOL for a while.
And there ain't nowhere COOLER than the OTP! 🥶
But...
Look at the above chart...
And the last couple of candles... Edging towards the BARRIER of the 8984-9022 supply zone and looking like it has NO FEAR!
I feel a GLC moment coming on... Could it finally be the OTP's time to shine... To transform into the Golden Le Creuset!? 🍲🔥
One... More... Demand side candle! 🤞
