The ASX 200 edged higher as coal, oil, and iron ore stocks rose on strong respective commodity price leads. Brent crude is up 12% and thermal coal more than 10% across the past nine sessions alone and iron ore crossed back above US$100/t today for the first time since June. If you don't dig / pump any of that stuff, then your share price was very likely down today!

Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 5.0 points higher at 9,010.9, 0.37% from its session high and just 0.13% from its low. Despite the gain at headline level, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers lagged decliners by 122 to 154.

S&P-ASX 200 Energy Sector Index intraday chart_7 Sep.png
S&P-ASX 200 Energy Sector Index intraday chart – firing on all cylinders today.

Energy (XEJ) (+1.8%) was Monday's dominant sector as ICE Brent crude futures gained 1.3% to US$97.50/bbl and globalCoal Newcastle Coal futures surged 1.8% to US$154.05/t. Thermal coal is now up more than 10% across the past nine sessions, while coking coal has surged more than 32% since the start of August. Whitehaven Coal (WHC) (+7.0%) led the sector, with New Hope Corp. (NHC) (+4.1%), Yancoal Australia (YAL) (+3.9%), and Stanmore Resources (SMR) (+3.3%) also popping.

Oil and gas producers were solid, too, as Karoon Energy (KAR) (+2.3%), Santos (STO) (+1.7%), Woodside Energy (WDS) (+1.6%), and Beach Energy (BPT) (+1.2%) all advanced.

Materials (XMJ) (+0.4%) was carried almost entirely by iron ore stocks as SGX iron ore futures gained 0.8% to US$100.70/t — their first foray back above the US$100/t psychological threshold since 17 June. Fortescue (FMG) (+3.2%) led, with Champion Iron (CIA) (+1.4%), Deterra Royalties (DRR) (+1.2%), BHP (BHP) (+1.1%), Mineral Resources (MIN) (+1.0%), and Rio Tinto (RIO) (+0.8%) all firmer.

The sector was dragged lower elsewhere — as gold stocks weighed, and base metals stocks were generally lower as COMEX copper eased 0.3% to US$6.661/lb.

S&P-ASX 200 Financials Sector Index intraday chart_7 Sep.png
S&P-ASX 200 Financials Sector Index intraday chart (just a little bit of juicing at the end there! 🧃😉)

Financials (XFJ) (+0.1%) held near flat — its now-characteristic anchoring role (dare we say "balancing" role!?) in a market still searching for direction. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (+0.7%) and National Australia Bank (NAB) (+0.5%) were the positive movers among the major banks, while ANZ (ANZ) (-0.1%) barely moved.

Information Technology (XIJ) (-2.6%) was Monday's worst sector by a wide margin — US benchmark bond yields remain near three-year highs and the mathematical impact on long-duration growth stock valuations is unrelenting. The discount rate applied to earnings weighted far into the future rises with each basis point of yield, compressing present values with precision. Xero (XRO) (-3.9%), Technology One (TNE) (-3.9%), WiseTech Global (WTC) (-3.8%), and Life360 (360) (-3.5%) were all sharply lower.

S&P-ASX 200 Information Technology Sector Index intraday chart_7 Sep.png
S&P-ASX 200 Information Technology Sector Index intraday chart. Computer says no...

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (-1.2%) continued its retreat as COMEX gold futures fell 0.8% to US$4,441/oz after having already fallen 1.4% on Friday — the precious metal's extended decline reflecting the same higher-yields, higher-opportunity-cost dynamic that hammered technology. Pantoro Gold (PNR) (-5.9%), Catalyst Metals (CYL) (-4.1%), Newmont (NEM) (-2.3%), and Ora Banda Mining (OBM) (-2.2%) were all lower.

Utilities (XUJ) (-1.0%) was another textbook bond-proxy casualty — when risk-free yields rise, the stable but modest income streams of utilities face direct competition from government bonds and their relative appeal diminishes. Origin Energy (ORG) (-1.1%), APA Group (APA) (-0.9%), and AGL Energy (AGL) (-0.6%) were all softer.

Health Care (XHJ) (-0.8%) let's go ditto — the same bond yield pressure that hit technology applied here, compressing the premium multiples of high-P/E healthcare names. Profit-taking after the sector's extraordinary August recovery may have also added a further dimension to the selling. Pro Medicus (PME) (-3.1%) went ex-dividend $0.37 per share fully franked today, but Artrya (AYA) (-4.3%), 4DMedical (4DX) (-2.2%), and Cochlear (COH) (-1.6%) had no excuses!

In other commodities moves, lithium stocks fell as GFEX lithium carbonate futures eased 0.2% to CNY 141,640/t and Australian spodumene concentrate fell 0.8% to US$2,255/t. Elevra Lithium (ELV) (-4.6%), Galan Lithium (GLN) (-3.7%), Liontown Resources (LTR) (-3.3%), Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (-3.1%), and Core Lithium (CXO) (-2.9%) were all lower.

On a positive note, rare earths stocks advanced despite NdPr prices in China easing 0.1% to CNY 735,000/t. Arafura Rare Earths (ARU) (+5.4%), Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+2.0%), and Iluka Resources (ILU) (+1.8%) all surged, with the buying appearing to reflect strategic demand expectations and supply chain positioning rather than any commodity price lead.

Analysis

Look at that volume. Friday’s session logged the lowest volume in 2026. 🤏

Save for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Independence Day 2025, it was the lowest regular session volume since 29 April last year.

And it looks a bit supply side. But it’s not, really.

Because it’s a mere shadow of Thursday’s advance.

Het, it was a Friday – so some profit taking ahead of the weekend, and possibly in consideration of the challenge expected at 26701-27191.

But the volume tells us: there was hardly any supply side conviction.

So, I remain positive on the Comp’s prospects, but also respectful of the fact that the price action since 26863 is neutral (with just candles pointing towards growing demand side control).

Status quo = Let’s see the candles in 26701-27191.

If they’re long and white and closing at their high = D >> S = P⬆️ MOTN vs long and black / upward pointing shadow and closing at their low = S >> D = P⬇️ MOTN.

View

1/2RP. (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26863 is the closest key point of supply vs 25910-25995 as the closest key point of demand, and then the long term trend ribbon (presently 24206-25099).

Analysis

The other financial news media will report a gain on the ASX and probably not much more (to quote another evening wrap: "ASX firm").

We look at that chart above and know today’s flat result is far from ideal: the second upward pointing shadow in two sessions.

Worse, those two confirmations of lingering latent supply looking to sell the rally above present levels is consistent with the prevailing short term downtrend, which itself is punctuated by:

  • Falling peaks & falling troughs 📉 = FOMO 🚫, HOFU 🚫, NUTE ✅, FOHO ✅, STR ✅ = S > D ⚠️

  • Predominance of supply side candles (i.e., those with black bodies and or upward pointing shadows closing near their lows) = FOMO 🚫, HOFU 🚫, NUTE ✅, FOHO ✅, STR ✅ = S > D ⚠️

  • Price trading below the short term trend ribbon for 4 days now, and last two upward pointing shadows indicating the ribbon is beginning to behave as a zone of dynamic excess supply = S > D ⚠️

That's 3 x ⚠️’s for me = 3 strikes for the short term trend. And so, I'm working off: STDT (short term downtrend) = the supply side is in control of the OTP’s price in at least the short term.

The long term trend remains intact as per the long term uptrend ribbon (LTUT).

That’s a lot of emoji’s, but as they say, an emoji tells a thousand words! 😉 If our Analysis suggests STDT + STUT, then our Accept must = Pull one’s head in a bit.

View (Act!)

I am at 1/2RP on Australian shares (i.e., 50% of my capital allocated to ASX shares invested vs 50% cash).

Key Levels

9123-9297 is the key zone of supply to contend with, while 8935-40 is the next key zone of demand.
