The ASX 200 finished barely positive after a strong intraday reversal — at one point tipping a two-week low. A modest pullback in the oil price released enough pressure to allow gold miners and base metals stocks to recover. What came down last week bounced today, and what had been holding up gave ground.

ASX 200 Intraday Chart

Markets
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 2.0 points higher at 8,793.3, 0.69% from its session low and just 0.11% from its high. As impressive as the above intraday chart is… i.e., in staving off what could have been a nasty decline, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers lagged decliners by 134 to 145. 👎
The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+3.6%) staged a sharp recovery as ICE Brent crude futures eased 0.6% to US$88.70/bbl, breaking a five-day winning streak for oil and, with it, releasing some of the the bond yield pressure that had hammered precious metals through the week.
The relationship has been mechanical throughout the conflict — oil falls, inflation expectations ease, yields retreat, and the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold shrinks. COMEX gold futures gained 1.7% to US$4,083/oz and COMEX silver futures surged 3.7% to US$59.18/oz – their best single-session move in weeks. Evolution Mining (EVN) (+5.6%), Bellevue Gold (BGL) (+5.5%), Emerald Resources (EMR) (+5.0%), and Black Cat Syndicate (BC8) (+4.6%) all recovered sharply.

ASX 200 Materials (XMJ) intraday chart
Materials (XMJ) (+1.3%) joined the recovery, with base metals leading the charge as LME copper gained 1.9% overnight and COMEX copper futures added a further 2.0% to US$6.47/lb in Asian trade. Nickel, tin, and zinc were also higher. South32 (S32) (+6.6%) surged after publishing a strong quarterly report, Capstone Copper (CSC) (+3.7%) and Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+2.4%) led the copper names, and BHP (BHP) (+1.3%) also firmed.
Information Technology (XIJ) (+3.3%) also found buyers as South Korea's KOSPI climbed 3.6% in an attempt to arrest a decline of almost 30% from its June 19 peak — its strength cascaded into other Asian technology markets and provided local tech stocks with an offshore lead they hadn't received in weeks. Megaport (MP1) (+5.1%), Life360 (360) (+2.8%), Technology One (TNE) (+2.5%), and Xero (XRO) (+2.1%) also advanced.

ASX 200 Financial XFJ) intraday chart
Financials (XFJ) (-0.7%) played its now-familiar role on the losing end of the day's mining-up, banks-down rotation. The sector found little support from company-specific news — HUB24 (HUB) (-4.8%) fell despite reporting record platform net inflows of $18.9 billion for FY26 and a 20% rise in funds under administration to $164.3 billion, with investors apparently pricing in more than the update delivered. ANZ (ANZ) (-1.2%), Westpac (WBC) (-1.2%), National Australia Bank (NAB) (-1.0%), and Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (-0.4%) all slipped.
Health Care (XHJ) (-1.0%) also gave ground as capital rotated back into growth and cyclical sectors — the defensive bid that had sustained healthcare through recent market anxiety eased noticeably. Pro Medicus (PME) (-4.6%) bore additional company-specific pressure after JPMorgan downgraded the stock to Neutral with a $203.70 price target. Sonic Healthcare (SHL) (-2.3%) and Telix Pharmaceuticals (TLX) (-1.5%) — the latter despite reporting 21% growth in second-quarter revenue to US$247 million, tracking toward the upper end of full-year guidance — were also lower.

Lithium Carbonate Futures (Benchmark month, back-adjusted) GFEX
Lithium stocks extended their bruising month despite GFEX lithium carbonate futures recovering sharply from an intraday low of CNY 136,800/t to close down a comparatively modest 1.6% at CNY 141,620/t — the intraday bounce offered some comfort but failed to arrest the selling in equities. Liontown Resources (LTR) (-5.1%), Mineral Resources (MIN) (-3.5%), Elevra Lithium (ELV) (-3.4%), Vulcan Energy Resources (VUL) (-2.6%), Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (-1.7%), and IGO (IGO) (-1.4%) were all lower.

Analysis
Pop and drop!
The Comp gapped up exactly 200 points on Monday’s open, rose another 95 points, and then it was near-perfect one-way traffic from there. 📉
Aren’t markets wonderful!
You can’t deny the raw investor enthusiasm that drives the Comp most of the time… Even when its potentially at threat of breaking down – which arguably it was at peril of doing as per Friday’s candle. It still found a 200 point opening pop!
But we must consider what filled the void once that opening enthusiasm had run its course.
Supply. Excess supply.
How do we know? The upward pointing shadow and black body of Tuesday’s candle – and perhaps most importantly – its close almost nearly at the session’s low. ❌❌
This implies unquenched excess supply in the system. Ding ding ding ding!!! 🛎️
The only thing that stopped even more supply leaching into the market was the closing bell!
So, while most might look at Monday’s session and say: “Oh, not so bad… Stocks were flat today”, we’re more likely to say: “Hmmm… Another fingerprint of excess supply = ⚠️”.
And yet, the Comp remains a ‘first instinct = sideways’ prospect for me. Why? Let’s do the Analysis with a checklist:
ST trend = 🟧+➡️ 👎
Price action = Rising Peaks + Falling Troughs 📈📉 👎
Candles = 🦓👎
LT Trend = 🟩⬆️ 👍
Volume = 🤏
So, 👎👎👎👍 🤏.
Accept requires an understanding of: Sideways Trend = Higher Risk for Trend Followers = Keep banging away trading here and MOTN you are going to lose!
The obvious way for a trend follow to Act under such circumstances is to pull right back on capital allocated to the chart in question.
But it won’t always be like this. At some point there will be a trend that ISN'T 🟧➡️!
What’s great about the current scenario is:
We are so far ahead of the curve with Act / risk management… Who cares if it goes sideways for an extended period = Crisis / wipeout impossible… That risk is off the table for prudent risk managers like us! 💪
We have such clear cut boundaries for what’s going to constitute the start of the next trend:
26789-27191 to the upside = a close in there with some long white bodied candles closing at their highs = 🚀
24980-25015 to the downside = a close in there with some long black bodied candles closing at their lows = ⚠️💥
In the meantime, we sit and wait…

I am at 1/2RP on my US portfolio (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100% 🪣).
Key Levels
Dead simple! 26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs 24980-25015 is the key zone of demand. In between = 1/2RP vs >= FRP and <= 1/3RP.

Analysis
The invisible hand did some of its finest work today, preventing the OTP’s chart from printing a nasty supply side candle that may have painted it in a very poor light for us lowly technical analysts!
Invisible hand. Juicing. Manipulation. FFS!
Or am I overthinking it? 🤔
Perhaps its just plain, good old BTD.
Buy the dip is one of the critical characteristics of a strong bull market.
Zoom in on the last few weeks and I think it’s fair to say that the downward pointing shadows created by all this BTD activity is the NORM rather than the exception.
Particularly within the crucial long term uptrend ribbon / 8708-8656 demand zone.
I won’t do the Gandalf clip again… YOU SHALL NOT PASS! 🧙♂️
How about this one: Why won't you die!!!? 🤣
The OTP just can't DIE! 🤣
Not dying is fantastic and all, but now we just need some follow through.
The current BTD must evolve into bona fide FOMO + HOFU – otherwise, it’s kinda irrelevant.
FOMO = The demand side is being driven to convert cash into stock due to fear or missing out.
HOFU = The supply side is reluctant to convert stock into cash because they expect to get more.
How will we know when BTD has evolved into FOMO + HOFU? 🧐
Step 1: Close above 8873.
Step 2: Print some closes (with long white candles closing near their highs) in / above 8984-9022.
In the meantime, invisible hand, juicing, manipulation, fund flow shenanigans… BTD… Whatever THIS happens to be… It’s all moot.
