Evening Wrap: ASX 200 dips on weak tech and energy stocks, banks rebound continues, and all that glitters is gold, gold, gold!
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 33.7 points lower, down 0.41%.
Mentioned
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 33.7 points lower, down 0.41%.
You could call it an atypical "pullback day". Things have been good. Nothing goes up in a straight line.
And to be fair...it wasn't all doom and gloom on the Aussie share market today. Gold stocks were brilliant, just some stunning moves there, and bank stocks were again stalwarts.
On the other hand, technology shares bore the brunt of the selling as US tech shares pared back overnight, and energy stocks were again belted on lower crude and natural gas prices.

Also, I have detailed technical analysis on the NASDAQ Composite, the S&P/ASX 200 and Silver in today's ChartWatch.

ASX 200 Session Chart
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 33.7 points lower at 8,284.7, 0.41% from its session high and just 0.13% from its low. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO), advancers lagged decliners by a disturbing 66 to 219.
The Gold (XGD) (+2.6%) sub-index was the best performing sector today, but not necessarily due to the very modest 0.5% rise in the gold price overnight or the 0.3% (so far) follow through in Asian trade today. More likely, it was stoked by some strong news-driven moves by Evolution Mining (ASX: EVN) (+6.8%) (September quarter report) and Regis Resources (ASX: RRL) (+6.7%) (Citi Investment Conference Presentation).
It was also possibly just a matter of time for the sector that simply got to a critical mass of very strong technical charts – as can be seen by the plethora of XGD constituents featuring in my ChartWatch Daily Scans Uptrends lists. Full details in the Interesting Moves section below.
The only other sector eking into the black today was the Financials (XFJ) (+0.27%) sector. It’s sliver of a gain is a reflection of the newly found strength in the Big 4 banking stocks – which each bucked broader market weakness today and logged solid gains – but also of a big pop in Bank of Queensland (ASX: BOQ) (+6.5%) following the release of its full year results.

The best stocks from the best ASX sectors today
Everything else was varying degrees of lousy, but the Information Technology (XIJ) (-1.3%) took out the gong for most lousy as it was dragged lower by a fall in the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite on Tuesday. I have detailed technical analysis on the Comp for you in tonight’s ChartWatch section below.
The rest was the usual ebb and flow on a day such as this one – the atypical “pullback day” – however, it’s worth singling out the Energy (XEJ) (-0.73%) sector for another loss. This time, lower crude and natural gas prices are to blame, but interestingly uranium stocks were also tagged today (uranium price was flat overnight).

The worst stocks from the worst ASX sectors today
ChartWatch
NASDAQ Composite Index
An interesting chart
The last time we covered the Comp was in ChartWatch in the Evening Wrap on 9 October.
In that update, we noted the strong then-prevailing short and long term uptrends, but conceded “it might take a few goes” to “break down” the supply expected between 18328 and 18671.
Well, count Monday and Tuesday’s push into and repulsion from 18328-18671 as the first go. My technical model assumes that each probing of a major supply area weakens it, that is, it removes some of the belligerent inventory of stock that is waiting to sell up there.
All things being equal, and with demand still sufficiently motivated, the next, and the next attempt, removes increasingly more supply and boosts the probability the next test will be “the one” to break through.
Of course, there is another scenario where there’s so much latent supply at that overhead zone of supply that there is insufficient demand to penetrate it. If this is the case, we won’t be completely in the dark – we must see the customary supply side candles as excess supply manifests itself in price.
These are candles with black bodies and or upward pointing shadows. You can add a lower peak in here also.
Tuesday’s candle is in my opinion a credible supply-side showing. It should be noted as less than ideal for the continuation of the prevailing short term uptrend. But, when put in context against broader trend, price action, candles, and dynamic demand factors – we should be far from alarmed at this point.
Demand will likely be found at the short term trend ribbon (dynamic, presently 17915-18060), and then at the static point of demand at 17767. The short term uptrend remains intact as long as the price continues to close above both of these points.
Supply remains at 18671. My tip? One more test, and then the one after that will be successful!
S&P/ASX 200 (XJO)
An interesting chart
The last time we covered was in ChartWatch in the Evening Wrap on 10 October.
In that update, I reiterated my stay the course message noting that “If the trend ‘aint broke…” Well you know the rest.
It still ‘aint broke. Nowhere near it. Furthermore, I am impressed by today’s lack of impetus to simply “just do what Wall Street did last night”. It was a relatively mild affair today...
The trends, price action, candles and dynamic demand remain intact here. I see absolutely no reason to not to back the prevailing demand-side controlled technicals.
I see demand at the short term uptrend ribbon (dynamic, presently 8152-8196) and then at 8107. The short term uptrend remains intact as long as the price continues to close above both of these points.
As for supply, looking up to the blue sky…I can’t see any!
Silver Futures (Front month, back-adjusted) COMEX
Chipping away...
(I haven’t done this one for a while, and given it fits so neatly with the “probing overhead supply” scenario discussed in the Comp analysis above, I figured it is an opportune time to look at it again!)
The last time we covered silver was in ChartWatch in the Evening Wrap on 2 October.
In that update, we were tracking a rather “stuck” silver price below the 32.425-33.505 supply zone. It’s still stuck – don’t get too excited silver bulls! But there are tentative signs in the technicals at least one more push is likely in store.
I note since that last update, the silver price flamed out in 32.425-33.505 with a rather spectacular upward pointing shadow on 4 Oct (creating a new point of supply at 33.225), followed by two customary black-bodied supply-side controlled follow throughs on 7 and 8 Oct.
The price has since rallied out of the dynamic demand zone of the short term uptrend ribbon – and has logged in the process several white-bodied and or downward pointing candles.
I think another test of 32.425-33.505 is imminent – potentially even in today’s candle. Ideally the next test happens sooner rather than later, but regardless, the candle that equates to the next test must close at or near its session high – and preferably it is also has a long white body – i.e., it is an emphatic demand-side showing.
Only then will supply in 32.425-33.505 begin to loosen, and the demand-side be emboldened that bidding up silver will not a fruitless enterprise.
It could happen very quickly…or it could all fizzle out completely. That’s not a cop out – merely a statement of fact about how these kinds of technical patterns usually play out.
Demand is at the short term uptrend ribbon (dynamic) and then at 30.345. A close below 30.345 means no "next leg of the next big silver bull market" for probably quite some time...
