What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Financials are booming: Banks, asset managers and fund administrators have continued to trend higher, underpinned by softer-than-expected Australian jobs data, solid quarterly earnings and stabilising bond yields. Commonwealth Bank's Q1 results were particularly noteworthy, showing resilient margins and credit quality. The bank exceeded profit forecasts before provisions, benefiting from stable net interest margins (NIM) and healthy mortgage growth. Analysts noted that reduced liquid assets helped maintain core NIM despite heightened deposit competition, while mortgage lending outperformed sector peers.

  • Industrials are showing strength: Several staple names in the Industrial space hit a fresh yearly high, including Brambles (pallets), NRW Holdings (mining contractor), SGH (diversified) and Computershare (investor services).

  • Quality names are floating to the top:Companies that surpassed earnings expectations in August continue to gain ground. Standout performers include JB Hi-Fi (FY24 earnings beat plus special dividend) and Pro Medicus (FY24 earnings beat and highlighted massive earnings growth runway).

  • Staples are struggling: Three key staples stocks – Woolworths, Endeavour Group and Metcash – are trading at 52-week lows. Woolworths' recent Q1 FY25 update revealed particular challenges, with projected EBIT of $1.51 billion (midpoint) representing a 5.6% year-over-year decline and falling 10% short of market expectations.
