Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that have hit fresh yearly highs and lows over the past week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to powerful underlying drivers — such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Mixed leadership: The S&P/ASX 200 scored two fresh all-time highs last Tuesday and Wednesday, supported by mixed sector participation. The rally notably excluded more defensive areas of the market, with Staples, Utilities, and Healthcare lagging behind. Nevertheless, this breadth of participation suggests the market remains in healthy territory, with a relatively risk/growth-led range of stocks reaching record levels amid FY25 reporting season.

  • Mixed financials: A few sub-components of the Financials sector like CBA, regional banks or insurance companies have fallen off. Instead, we're seeing continued strength in asset mangers and fund administrators.
