Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that have hit fresh yearly highs and lows over the past week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to powerful underlying drivers — such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Solid breadth: 27 S&P/ASX 200 constituents hit fresh yearly highs last week, a solid outcome given the market's choppy performance, which saw a 1.0% dip on Monday and finished the week in the red. Several themes have emerged despite weakness at the Index level. The industrial and technology sector remain strong, while miners showcased operational excellence, with Newmont report a strong Q2 earnings beat (alongside strong quarterlies from BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue). Healthcare also showed signs of resurgence, though only ResMed managed to break through to a 52-week high. On the downside, just two stocks touched fresh yearly lows, both largely attributed to disappointing trading updates
