If we consider the S&P/ASX 200 Total Return Index, which adds back dividends to the regular S&P/ASX200, today's broad-based share price surge has sent the Australian share market to a record high. Time to celebrate (and the good times could be set to last!) 🥳

Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 126.5 points higher at 9,145.8, 1.40% from its session low and smack–bang on its session high. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by a dominant 238 to 47. 💪

The official Total Return index numbers aren't in at the time of writing, but if we add today's gain of 1.4% to yesterday's S&P/ASX 200 Total Return Index's close of 123,842, we get 125,575 — which eclipses the previous record high set on March 2 at 124,880.

Hey, the market looked pretty darn good on that day, too. Then You Know Who did you know what to Iran! 💥

S&P-ASX 200 IT (XIJ) intraday chart_4 Aug.png
S&P-ASX 200 IT (XIJ) intraday chart

Information Technology (XIJ) (+3.9%) was the standout today, aided by the Nasdaq's overnight heroics — driven by reignited AI infrastructure and semiconductor enthusiasm. This enthusiasm cascaded directly into local tech stocks. Life360 (360) (+11.4%) led with its best session in months, followed by Appen (APX) (+6.0%), Catapult Sports (CAT) (+6.0%), and Megaport (MP1) (+5.7%). In the majors, WiseTech Global (WTC) (+3.0%) and Xero (XRO) (+3.5%) also rose.

S&P-ASX 200 Health Care (XHJ) intraday chart_4 Aug.png
S&P-ASX 200 Health Care (XHJ) intraday chart

Health Care (XHJ) (+2.4%) was the next clearest expression of the Nasdaq-led risk-on move. 4DMedical (4DX) (+8.6%) was the standout, with Clarity Pharmaceuticals (CU6) (+6.8%), Pro Medicus (PME) (+4.9%), and CSL (CSL) (+3.6%) — continuing its recovery from this year's damaging period — all advancing.

S&P-ASX 200 Financials (XFJ) intraday chart_4 Aug.png
S&P-ASX 200 Financials (XFJ) intraday chart

Financials (XFJ) (+1.9%) participated with unusual conviction for a risk-on day — the sector typically lags when growth names surge, but today it held its own. Macquarie Group (MQG) (+3.1%) hit a fresh record as it continues to benefit from commodity market volatility. National Australia Bank (NAB) (+3.0%), ANZ (ANZ) (+2.4%), Westpac (WBC) (+1.7%), and Commonwealth Bank (CBA) (+1.6%) all advanced.

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+1.9%) recovered as oil's overnight plunge eased the inflation-yields-gold-opportunity-cost equation and helped on the cost-input front. COMEX gold futures gained 0.75% to US$4,120.90/oz and COMEX silver futures surged 2.5% to US$59.32/oz. Evolution Mining (EVN) (+2.8%), Newmont (NEM) (+2.1%), Westgold Resources (WGX) (+2.1%), and Northern Star Resources (NST) (+2.1%) all advanced.

Materials (XMJ) (+1.1%) was led by critical minerals and rare earths names rather than the major diversifieds — a notable distinction that suggests the AI infrastructure narrative is driving selective buying within the mining sector. Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+6.6%) surged, with Arafura Rare Earths (ARU) (+5.7%), Iluka Resources (ILU) (+5.0%), and Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (+4.9%) all strongly higher.

Real Estate (XPJ) (+1.2%) caught the lower bond yield tailwind, with the REIT reporting season adding individual stock catalysts. Charter Hall Social Infrastructure REIT (CQE) (+7.8%) surged after reporting a 27.5% profit increase. Centuria Office REIT (COF) (-1.1%) fell despite a 379% profit increase — investors apparently unimpressed by the quality of the result.

Energy (XEJ) (+0.7%) was the session's relative laggard — but still managed a positive result given ICE Brent crude futures fell 4.7% overnight before recovering 1.2% to US$84.78/bbl in Asian trade. The sector split cleanly along the oil price divide: downstream fuel retailers that had benefited most from elevated crude — Viva Energy (VEA) (-3.6%) and Ampol (ALD) (-2.9%) — both fell hard as refinery margins compressed on the oil price retreat. Upstream oil and gas producers — Woodside Energy (WDS) (+1.4%) and Santos (STO) (+0.9%) — still found buyers.

Utilities (XUJ) (-0.4%) was the sole sector to finish in negative territory — the previous weeks' crisis-driven defensive flows are unwinding as risk appetite normalises.

Analysis

Sublime. Print that chart out (zoom in on the last 4 candles). Frame it.

That’s one for the pool room. 🖼️

For many months, I’ve been hearing the media regurgitate blah from value-focussed fund managers about how the semi-conductor / AI investment rally is “Just like the Dot-Com boom”… Blah… valuations this and that… Blah… It will all end in tears. Blah blah blah!

I traded the Dot-Com boom. I made over a million dollars at the age of 21. 🤑

Held on far too long… All the way down… Gave it all back… And then some. 😭

Up until last night, the current rally was only a poor imitation of the excesses of the Dot-Com boom.

Sure, the up-bits before that last correction (think trillions wiped off the KOSPI!) was impressive — but it didn’t ‘feel Dot-Com’.

And that last correction was interesting… But it was just a pullback… Not a proper crash.

Nope, the bit that makes this time feel like Dot-Com is neither of those things… It’s the last 3 candles.

The reversal from the brink of lights outPotential Armageddon… Followed by a face-melting rally like nothing ever happened.

From total abject fear to FOMO in no time at all. Literally. Consider the deathly pall of Thursday’s black candle-close on the low, to Friday’s gap-up open and run.

The cherry on top of the icing on top of the cake is last night’s total “poop your pants if you’re not invested” candle.

That’s the official name for it: A PYPIYNI Candle.

When investors go from thinking the world has ended to: It’s on again, everything I believed before I lost my shirt last week is still true… Let me back in… BUY BUY BUY BUY!!!

Well… Now it feels like the Dot-Com boom! Bring it on! 💪

Moving towards 2/3RP. It doesn't have to happen overnight, as in — it literally doesn't have to happen tonight! Just moving there as the +R's present themselves with 2/3RP as a target. I can't ignore last night's candle and what it implies about the demand-supply environment. The Comp is not out of the woods yet — it very likely will be tested in 26789-27191 — and I will be watching closely for supply side candles and volume to suggest this is a false start. (RP = Risk Position — it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26789-27191 is the key zone of supply vs 24425 is the key point of demand.

2/3RP or FRP? That's really the only question I have to consider after today's candle. I must say, that's a mighty solid candle. Moving to FRP. Watch out below! (My personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in ASX stocks is now 100%).

Key Levels

9201 is the key point of supply, while demand is at 8940 and then at the short term uptrend ribbon (presently 8861-8902).
