Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that hit fresh yearly highs and lows last week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to meaningful underlying drivers such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Breadth continues to deteriorate: The ASX 200 is down 5.8% since its 5 August record high and sits fractionally higher year-to-date. The headline returns don't look all that bad, but 26 constituents, or 13% of the index, logged a 52-week low last week. The weakness is concentrated in rate-sensitive pockets like REITs, retailers and tech, though iron ore, funds management and industrials are starting to show the same. What's interesting is that these rate-sensitive sectors have moved vertically lower in recent weeks, with the slow-moving ASX 200 real estate sector down 14% since 5 August to its lowest since January 2024. It's not a good look for the broader market, showing more weakness under the hood as bond yields keep trading at stressful levels. As for the highs, reporting season winners like AMP and Ramsay Health Care continue to defy all logic and trend higher, while energy names grind up on stubbornly high energy prices and even stronger prices for refined products like diesel and jet fuel.
