Evening Wrap: ASX 200 surges to record on gold, property, tech, as mining stocks falter, Droneshield blitzed again
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 58.6 points higher, up 0.73%.
Mentioned
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 58.6 points higher, up 0.73%.
Gold stocks were the best performing stocks today, as gold prices tipped new highs, but there were also very strong performances from Property, Technology, and Financials stocks.
Worryingly, key mining stocks sold off on sharp losses in base metals and other key commodity prices.
Hot stock Droneshield (DRO) came under fire from investors again today as yesterday's sharp sell off continued. It did manage to steady the ship (drone?) by the close, however, paring its losses to just 10%.
Elsewhere, brokers responded to BHP Group's and Rio Tinto's quarterly reports, but they were busy elsewhere too (upgrades and downgrades).
I've got all the details on all the above in tonight's Wrap, plus plenty more, so....
Let's dive in!

ASX 200 Session Chart
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 58.6 points higher at 8,057.9, 0.73% from its session low and just 0.32% from its high. In the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO), advancers beat decliners by an impressive 218 to 60.
The Gold (XGD) (+1.8%) sub-index was the best performing sector today, likely in response to a very nice rise in the gold price to touch new all-time highs. I’ve got technical analysis on gold futures for you in today’s ChartWatch section.
Also doing well today was the Real Estate Investment Trusts (XPJ) (+1.5%) sector. It’s still basking in the warm afterglow of continued falls in key global benchmark yields – see the chart of the US 10-Year T-Note Yield below. REITs are essentially big balls of debt, so anytime debt gets cheaper it's usually a good thing.

ASX Tech, Communications Services, and Financial stocks today
Doing it tough today was the Resources (XJR) (-0.24%). It’s loss today is particularly conspicuous given the strength in the broader market.
Base metals prices (apart from nickel) tanked overnight and falls in uranium and iron ore prices also didn’t help – nor did muted responses to BHP Group (ASX: BHP) and Rio Tinto (ASX: RIO) quarterly production reports. I’ve got all the key broker updates for you on BHP and RIO in today’s Broker Notes section.
Within the sector, it was generally tough day for ASX uranium stocks as uranium futures dipped Monday. I’ve got technical analysis on uranium futures for you in today’s ChartWatch section.

Gold Futures (Front month, back-adjusted) COMEX
I admit, I was a doubter...but...
The last time we covered gold was in ChartWatch in the Evening Wrap on 12 July.
In that last update, we talked about the key drivers impacting the gold price – its worth catching if you didn’t read it.
I also noted trends, price action, and candles each looked “pretty good”. As we sit at the top of the 2456-2477 supply zone – they still do.
I tell you in each ChartWatch to “watch the candles at major supply zones because they’ll tell you everything you need to know about just how much supply is actually there”.
I usually go on to say something along the lines of: If you see supply-side candles in the zone (i.e. black candles and or upward pointing shadows), then it is indeed supply. Caution is required, perhaps even lightening the load….and…
On the other hand, if you see demand-side candles in the supply zone (i.e., white-bodied and or downward pointing shadows), then there isn’t actually any supply there. They too are on the bullish bandwagon. No lightening the load in this situation (beep…beep…beep…🛻)
Today’s candle does have an upper shadow, but it is still live, and therefore I must discount it. We will continue to watch intently!
2407 should now be demand. There’s no supply past 2477 because it’s all blue sky from here.
Uranium Futures (Front month, back-adjusted) COMEX
"Failed to move the dial in a positive way"
The last time we covered uranium was in ChartWatch in the Evening Wrap on 11 July.
In that last update, we had just learned the world’s largest producer Kazatomprom (KAP) is facing higher taxes. The development could lead to lower production by KAP, and or increase the uranium cost curve in general.
I pondered that this seemingly good news had yet to have any impact on the uranium price. In my experience, when good news fails to move the dial in a positive way, it’s either already completely factored into prices, or the supply side soaked up any resultant influx in demand.
It could be the former, but if it’s the latter, then it’s a major negative for the uranium price. Supply is looking for any liquidity to offload.
The uranium price action hints at this possibility, with a very modest downturn in the price over the last couple of sessions. Instead of closing above the 86.75 point of supply on the good news and restarting the short term uptrend, the probability of a rollover to commence a new long term downtrend is growing.
A close below the 83.15 point of demand would seal the deal, and it’s pretty fluid from there. I peg the next point of demand at the 76.40 peak from 30 October 2023.
