The ASX 200 reversed early gains to finish flat after hotter-than-expected inflation data raised the prospect of another RBA rate hike. Miners (particularly critical minerals) and tech held firm as the AI trade reignited; consumer stocks, energy, and defensives all fell.

Markets

The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) finished 2.8 points lower at 8,847.3, 1% from its session high and smack–bang on its session low. Despite the slip at benchmark level, in the broader-based S&P/ASX 300 (XKO) advancers beat decliners by a modest 159 to 125.

Information Technology (XIJ) (+2.4%) caught a strong bid as the AI trade reignited — Anthropic’s landmark IPO filing and Meta’s announcement of a US$95 billion stock offering to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure sparked a chipmaker rally overnight that extended into local tech stocks. Appen (APX) (+9.0%) and Data#3 (DTL) (+7.8%) were the standout movers, with Megaport (MP1) (+5.1%) and WiseTech Global (WTC) (+1.5%) also advancing.

The Gold Sub-Index (XGD) (+2.6%) led the session as gold stocks rallied on an overnight gain in the gold price, with COMEX benchmark gold futures rising 0.9% overnight before conceding most of that gain in Asian trade — easing back -0.8% to US$4,043/oz. West African Resources (WAF) (+5.3%) and Pantoro Gold (PNR) (+5.0%) led the advance, with Kingsgate Consolidated (KCN) (+4.8%) and Westgold Resources (WGX) (+4.5%) also advancing.

Materials (XMJ) (+1.1%) advanced as AI-driven copper demand sentiment continued to support the sector — COMEX benchmark copper futures rose 1.7% overnight before going flat in the Asian session at US$6.647/lb — with rare earths and copper stocks among the strongest performers. Arafura Rare Earths (ARU) (+10.3%) and Aurelia Metals (AMI) (+10.3%) led the charge, followed by Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) (+7.3%) and Sandfire Resources (SFR) (+4.8%).

Lithium stocks also made headway — Pilbara Minerals (PLS) (+3.8%) rose after reporting record production in the September quarter, even as GFEX lithium carbonate futures in China fell -5.1% to CNY93,520/t. Today's mining sector trade started in New York and cared little about actual commodity price moves... 🤔

Energy (XEJ) (-2.5%) was the session’s worst-performing sector as oil prices fell overnight before recovering in Asian trade — ICE benchmark Brent crude oil futures dropping 1.2% overnight before bouncing +1.6% to US$111.15/bbl in Asia — and SGX Australian Premium Coking Coal futures shed -1.7% to US$155.05/t.

Oil and gas stocks bore the brunt: Woodside Energy (WDS) (-3.2%) and Santos (STO) (-1.7%) were both lower, while fuel retailer Ampol (ALD) (-3.8%) fell sharply. Coal stocks followed: New Hope Corp (NHC) (-3.9%) and Yancoal Australia (YAL) (-3.7%) gave ground.

Uranium was the sole sub-sector to buck the trend, surging after the Sprott Uranium Miners ETF — a widely tracked measure of international uranium stocks — jumped 5.2% overnight on the reignited AI trade, which has boosted the long-term demand case for nuclear power. Boss Energy (BOE) (+10.0%), Bannerman Energy (BMN) (+9.3%), Deep Yellow (DYL) (+7.4%), and Paladin Energy (PDN) (+4.9%) all surged.

Consumer Discretionary (XDJ) (-1.5%) fell sharply on the inflation data, with traders pricing in an 87% probability of a fifth RBA rate rise to 4.85% on Melbourne Cup day — raising fears that higher borrowing costs and a slowing housing market will further dampen consumer spending. Universal Store (UNI) (-3.8%) and Super Retail Group (SUL) (-3.2%) led the falls, with JB Hi-Fi (JBH) (-2.3%) and Wesfarmers (WES) (-2.1%) also lower.

Utilities (XUJ) (-1.2%) were hit by a combination of the ongoing rotation out of defensives and the prospect of rising rates. APA Group (APA) (-2.2%), AGL Energy (AGL) (-1.1%), and Origin Energy (ORG) (-0.6%) all declined.

Communication Services (XTJ) (-1.1%) tracked weakness in major defensive earner Telstra (TLS) (-1.2%), which weighed on the sector.

Consumer Staples (XSJ) (-0.7%) faced a double headwind — hot inflation raising input cost concerns and the ongoing rotation away from defensives. Metcash (MTS) (-1.2%) and Coles Group (COL) (-1.2%) led the falls, with Woolworths (WOW) (-0.5%) also lower.

Analysis

Solid candle on the Comp. The AI trade is back! The narrative extends to the oil price is down (a bit), so capital does what it usually does in a world that's awash with capital: FIND RISK ASSETS.

Risk assets like stocks.

(Oh no Carl, my stocks aren't RISKY, they're all BLUE CHIPS... they're safe! 🧐)

Nope. Not how markets work, I'm afraid! ⚠️

All stocks are risky. That's how the pro's perceive them. If you want certainty over a specific holding period — go buy a T-bond!

As I said in today's ChartWatch Live Webinar (link below 👇), I'm not a bull and I'm not a bear. I just do the analysis and allocate risk based upon my understanding of: Trends = MOTN P⬆️ or MOTN P ⬇️.

Having said that, based on my substantial experience, bulls are better markets to make money in... so bring on the bull! 🐂

But. Yes, you know there's a but... There's still some stuff going on that's more consistent with a bear emerging sooner or (hopefully) later. Much, much later, if we're lucky. 🤞

Anyways, full thoughts and analysis in the video... so I won't labour here. Suffice it to say, solid candle on the Comp on Tuesday — taking a good look at the short term trend ribbon — but not yet besting it.

Let's wait for that interaction before deciding to back this bull any more than we already are.

I am 1/2RP on US stocks (RP = Risk Position – it reflects my personal allowable capital allocation limit for my investments in US stocks. So 1/2RP is 50%, 2/3RP is 67% and FRP is 100%).

Key Levels

26779 is the closest key point of supply, but the short term trend ribbon will also likely act as a dynamic zone of supply (presently 26599–26614). 25803-26023 is the closest key zone of demand.

Analysis

Downward pointing shadows... all over the place for a while there...

I add risk.

Today.

Big upward pointing shadow!

Oh well, it just is. And if you scroll up to the intraday chart of the OTP above, it's clear that the shift from D > S = P ⬆️ to S > D = P ⬇️ coincided with the inflation data.

News is just that. New information that prior to its existence, did not figure in the demand-supply environment's ability to price risk, and therefore to ascertain demand-supply intentions.

News happens. That other thing that normally comes before the word "happens"... happens! 😉

Does today's candle change the trends, price action, and candles? 🤔

No on all counts. Even as a clear supply side candle — perfectly tickling and failing at the 8935-40 supply zone — it's one supply showing among many recent demand side counterparts.

So we wait. For further evidence that the news has triggered a meaningful shift in the demand-supply environment of sufficient magnitude to increase the probability MOTN of P ⬇️.

Until then, I can't see any reason to change my current RP.

View

I am 1/2RP on Australian shares (i.e., 50% cash vs 50% invested, with some of the invested portion allocated to shorts).

Key Levels

8935-8940 is the closest zone of supply vs 8613-8641 is the critical zone of demand.

    • Reader: Headline worse than expected and no sugar coating it... a shocker! But trimmed mean in line with expectations. The latter only coming in "as forecast" won't matter, as in, it's no comfort to the RBA — who will likely increase rates one more time in this cycle at its Cup Day meeting next month. Great if you have cash in the bank...🥳 Not so great if you have a mortgage... 😭
