What does the data tell us?
A market devoid of leadership: The ASX 200 is trading around breakeven year-to-date and sits about 5.5% below its 6 August record high. It doesn’t sound too bad, yet 26 constituents (13%) hit a fresh 52-week low last week. Looking further down and more risk/speculative barometers like the Small Ords is down 13% year-to-date and the Emerging Companies index has shed 7.7%. It's a clear sign the market is being propped up by a handful of heavyweight banks and miners while speculative appetite runs rather thin. Sector by sector, there’s not much to get excited about. The once high-flying miners remain in a pullback, tech is showing signs of life but sits well off its 52-week highs, energy remains resilient and healthcare is arguably the strongest sector right now, though it still has some work to do to reclaim a yearly high.
REITs bounce off lows: It looks like a tentative low could be in for real estate stocks. Most names hit a fresh 52-week low last Monday before a four-day win streak lifted the S&P/ASX 200 Real Estate index almost 4% off its lowest level since December 2023. The average real estate name in the list below also gained 4.0% last week, but remains down an average 21.8% year-to-date. The key Aussie 10-year yield has taken a breather in recent days. And by breather, I mean trading sideways instead of notching fresh multi-decade highs. It’s currently at 5.36%, down from late-September highs of 5.46%.
Iron ore crumbles: Fortescue tumbled 5.3% last week as Singapore iron ore futures fell as low as US$90.90 a tonne on Friday, the lowest since September 2024. The fundamentals remain weak, with Bloomberg reporting fewer than 7% of Chinese steel mills are profitable, raising the risk of deeper production cuts. Fortescue was already under pressure after its September quarter shipments fell 6% year-on-year due to its CMRG negotiations. Peer Champion Iron has continued its downward spiral, now down 42% year-to-date and trading at its lowest level since September 2020.
