ASX 200 Intraday Chart

ASX 200 gives back early gains to close slightly higher (Source: Market Index)

Markets

  • ASX 200 faded session highs of (+0.51%) to close slightly higher

  • Large caps held up, with the ASX 20 up 0.5% and the ASX 50 up 0.4%, while the Small Ords fell 1.3% and the Emerging Companies index tumbled 2.3%

  • Defensives led the market, with Healthcare, Utilities and Financials each up more than 1%, and Staples, Telcos and Real Estate also outperforming

  • Metals reversed sharply after a steady open, with steep losses for silver (down 4.1%), palladium (2.8%), platinum (2.7%), gold (2.5%), copper (1.6%) and nickel (1.0%)

  • Materials flipped from gains to losses, swinging from a roughly 0.5% rise in early trade to a 1.3% decline as base and precious metals slid

  • Tech extended its slide, with the ASX 200 Tech index at its lowest since 15 April and now down 25.6% year-to-date, compared with an 8.6% loss as at 25 August

  • The market played defence as Brent rose 1.3% to US$103 a barrel and global bond yields returned to multi-year and multi-decade highs after a brief reprieve over the past couple of sessions

A few stocks of interest:

  • CSL rose 2.8% to break out of the flat range it has held since late August, extending a roughly 90% rally from its 2 June low. The stock is now up 4.8% year-to-date. Chasing after a move like that is a brave call, but the momentum is hard to argue with. Cochlear also rose 2.0% to its highest close since 22 April, the day it plunged 40% in a single session

  • Northern Star jumped 6.4% after receiving a $27.00 per share bid from Gold Fields, a 22% premium to its last close. Elliott Investment Management, which held a roughly 6.2% stake as at 10 September, says it still sees "immense potential" for value creation and that the bid shows "others clearly see value here too"

  • Karoon tumbled 12.8% after its second production downgrade in four months. 2026 production guidance has now been cut from 8.1-9.2MMboe to 6.6-7.2MMboe across two announcements, down 20% at the midpoint. Karoon is completely unhedged, so it keeps some upside if oil spikes, but operationally it has been a tough stretch

Metrics Credit Partners flagged NTA cuts across three of its listed funds:

  • Metrics Real Estate Multi-Strategy Fund will cut its audited 30 June NTA by 12.16% to $2.22 per unit, mainly due to a 30c fair value write-down on its unlisted commercial real estate (CRE) equity investments

  • Metrics Income Opportunities Trust will cut its audited 30 June NTA by 10.08% to $1.93 per unit, driven by fair value write-downs of 13c on private equity and 5c on CRE equity

  • Metrics Master Income Trust will trim its audited 30 June NTA by 1.99% to $1.96 per unit after a 4c increase in individually assessed credit loss provisions

Economy

  • Australia's final FY26 budget deficit was $22.3bn or approximately 0.8% of GDP, better than the $28.3bn forecast earlier this year but wider than FY25's $10bn deficit which ended two consecutive years of surpluses

  • China August industrial profits rose 4.2% year-on-year, slowing from 11.2% growth in July as tech manufacturing strength from the AI boom was outweighed by weak domestic demand
