The ASX 200 slipped in a relatively uneventful session, with no lead from Wall Street after US markets closed last Friday for Independence Day. Banks and miners finished broadly lower and weighed on the benchmark, while the high-flying healthcare and discretionary sectors kept trending higher. Overall, another dicey day for the ASX, and zooming out, a directionless period for the index.

Markets
ASX 200 traded within a narrow range (+0.14% vs. -0.30%), closing the session down 0.21%
Healthcare (+1.5%) was the best performing sector, now up 23% since the 3-Jun low. The sector has shown a massive change of character in recent weeks, trading meaningfully above the 50-day for the first time since Aug-25, with the 50-day now sloping positive. It's climbed in 17 of the last 22 sessions, moving so cleanly we haven't even had the chance to trot out 'higher highs and higher lows'. The battered CSL and Cochlear have led the move, but both companies haven't announced anything since their latest earnings downgrades.
Tech (+0.9%) had slightly negative breadth, but the index higher off the back of Wisetech (+7.3%)
Discretionary (+0.4%) rose for a second session after a three-day pullback. This is another sector that's piqued my interest. It fell as much as 30% from its Aug-25 high, then recouped around half of that (up 20% from the 13-May low). Could this be a classic 'the market bottoms before earnings' scenario?
Industrials (-0.2%) held up but quite a few high-flying names faced heavy selling, including Ventia (-3.4%), NRW (-2.9%), Mondaelphous (-2.2%), Tasmea (-7.0%).
Financials (-0.3%) off lows of -0.6%, closing just above the 200-day. Nothing much to see here.
Materials (-0.6%) eased after rallying 2.5% last Friday. That was the session where the index opened around 1% higher and surged around 11 am as most commodity prices kicked on. It looks like most of that optimism was already priced in and failed to follow through today.

Interesting Movers
Trading higher
- Vault Minerals (VAU) $5.09+11.6%
rose after it announced receipt of a 'superior' binding proposal from Genesis Minerals valuing Vault at $5.274 per share (consideration of 0.7629 new Genesis shares plus $0.475 cash per Vault share).
- Select Harvests (SHV) $3.96+7.6%
rose after it announced no news, though agriculture peers like Nufarm (+4.6%) traded higher.
- Wisetech Global (WTC) $35.37+7.3%
rallied off no news. The stock is still trading below 22-Jun levels, when it sold off 18.4% after the AFP's human exploitation taskforce opened an investigation into founder Richard White.
- Boss Energy (BOE) $1.36+6.3%
rose after Macquarie upgraded to Outperform and lifted its 12-month target 35% to $1.75 citing higher Gould's Dam and Jason values and a firmer strategic uranium inventory valuation. The analysts see improved risk/reward ahead of an accelerated feasibility study and investor day, with growing confidence in Honeymoon's wider-spaced wellfield approach.
Trading Lower
- Lindian Resources (LIN) $0.90-5.8%
dipped as rare earth peers like Hastings (-9.8%), Dateline (-7.1%), Brazilian Rare Earths (-4.8%), Iluka (-1.7%) and Lynas (-0.8%) traded broadly lower.
- Genesis Minerals (GMD) $6.03-4.1%
fell after its strategically superior bid for Vault Minerals.
- Elevra Lithium (ELV) $10.13-4.1%
fell on no news, though lithium peers including Liontown (-2.9%) and PLS Group (-1.7%) traded broadly lower.
