In a nutshell:

  • ASX 200 trended higher and close at best levels, clawing back part of Thursday's 2% selloff, though breadth was only modest with 62% of constituents higher

  • Tech surged 4.4% and is now up 8.1% in four sessions, with WiseTech (+6.6%), Xero (+4.5%) and TechnologyOne (+4.4%) joining a rally led earlier in the week by Codan and Data#3

  • The 3-year yield fell 4 bps to 4.88%, its lowest since 10 September, while Real Estate (-1.6%) slid to its lowest close since January 2024

ASX 200 Intraday Chart

ASX 200 trends higher to close at best levels (Source: Market Index)
ASX 200 trends higher to close at best levels (Source: Market Index)

Markets

  • ASX 200 on the mend after Thursday's 2% selloff, where all 11 sectors and 88% of constituents finished lower. Breadth was still a little dicey today, with 124 (62%) of constituents higher, and the laggards were mainly REITs, healthcare and the odd retailer and miner

  • A decent bounce and a close at session highs, but it's only a start. Encouragingly, the policy-sensitive 3-year yield is starting to roll over, down 4 bps to 4.88% (the lowest since 10 Sep), while the 10-year is down 4 bps to 5.32%. Brent is also easing (-0.8%) to US$101.38 after spiking ~4% overnight on news the US had deployed an additional aircraft carrier and 10,000 troops to the Middle East

  • A massive day for Tech (+4.4%), now up 8.1% over the last four sessions, though the rally is coming straight off a six-month low. It coincides with a string of strong updates from Codan (+28% this week on a 1H27 guidance update), Data#3 (+20.4% this week after better-than-expected 1H27 guidance) and Megaport (+13.4% after securing ~$1bn in AI contracts)

  • Those updates all landed earlier in the week, so it's interesting to see such a broad-based rally today, with 'old guard' names like WiseTech (+6.6%), Xero (+4.5%) and TechnologyOne (+4.4%) catching a strong bid. WiseTech was trading near year-to-date lows, which is pretty much a six-year low. The timing is a little odd given US software stocks (via the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF) have looked constructive for weeks. So today's move looks like a late rotation, an oversold bounce or this week's trading updates lifting the sector more broadly

  • Healthcare (-1.1%) had been holding up incredibly well, but is now down 3.5% over the last two sessions and back at the lower bound of its recent trading range

  • Real Estate (-1.6%) closed at its lowest level since January 2024. The last two sessions have erased all of Wednesday's 3.6% rally

  • Overall, not a whole lot to see. The market is trying to stabilise after a sizeable dump to a near four-month low. Yields are (tentatively) moving in the right direction, we're seeing bounces from areas of technical weakness, so really, nothing to get too excited about yet
