Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that have hit fresh yearly highs and lows over the past week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to meaningful underlying drivers such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

No man's land: Not a whole lot of highs or lows last week and that's exactly where markets are at the moment. There's a slight bearish lean amid themes like softening labour markets, hawkish commentary from Fed policymakers, no more RBA rate cuts expected for this year (with further easing next year also unlikely), and AI scrutiny (cash burn, leverage, circularity etc). The ASX 200 is trading in what I call "no man's land", still trading within 3.5% of all-time highs but also on the cusp of a fresh 3-month low and trading below the 50-day moving average. Could it break lower? Absolutely. Could it find support and consolidate before chugging higher? Equally likely. Right now, both paths are on the table and we'll need more data to see which way the market moves.

52-week highs fade: Despite 11 stocks tagging fresh yearly highs, they averaged a 2.9% decline lats week. Several high-flying names like Codan, MinRes and Pilbara Minerals pulled back sharply, while banks like NAB and Westpac gave back weekly gains to finish around breakeven. NAB's FY25 result was broadly in-line with expectations, though soft spots like non-interest income, higher costs and elevated impairments took some optimism out of the stock. Analysts saw it as mixed, particularly given the sharp rally since March (+25%) which has stretched valuation and lifted the hurdle for further outperformance.
