Welcome back to the 52-Week Series, where we recap the S&P/ASX 200 stocks that have hit fresh yearly highs and lows over the past week. Tracking this data point helps identify emerging trends across various stocks and sectors.

When clusters of stocks within a sector reach new highs or lows, it often points to meaningful underlying drivers such as shifting commodity prices, changing demand patterns (such as AI, pivots into defensive sectors, consumer weakness etc), or companies beating/missing earnings expectations.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

  • Another quiet week: The ASX 200 finished last week down 0.28%, continuing its recent run of sideways and choppy action. That one step forward, one step back grind left this week with the exact same count of 52-week highs and lows as the prior week (11). AMP and Ampol both notched yearly highs for a second straight week, while Austal, Pexa, GQG Partners and Vulcan Energy kept trending lower. The big picture remains trendless and dicey, and conviction is hard to come by. The energy sector rallied 13.3% between 8-27 July as the US-Iran peace deal fell through, sending Brent as high as US$100 a barrel. But over the weekend the US halted attacks after two weeks of bombing, dragging Brent down around 10% to US$88 and the energy sector 3.2% lower. So what do you do at this crossroad? That same rising oil backdrop drove a near 15% correction in the high-flying materials sector between 17 June and 20 July, though it's since clawed back 4.2% off the low.

  • A look at sectors: Here's the S&P/ASX 200 (black) against the 11 sectors over the past twelve months. Materials have outperformed the rest by a wide margin despite trading around 10% off recent highs, while the battered healthcare and tech indices have bounced off their earlier-year lows. No new highs, no new lows, and so we're left with another quiet week.
