Glossary of common reporting season terms

• Beat / Miss — A beat occurs when reported results exceed consensus expectations; a miss occurs when they fall short. Beats and misses are often the primary driver of share price moves post announcement.

• Consensus — The market’s average expectation, typically derived from broker forecasts. Share prices tend to react to results relative to consensus, not just absolute outcomes.

• EBITDA (Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) — Commonly used for non-financial companies as a proxy for operating performance, but not meaningful for most banking and insurance companies.

• EPS (Earnings Per Share) — Profit attributable to shareholders divided by shares outstanding. A core measure of profitability and a key driver of valuation multiples.

• n/e (No estimate) — In the calendar below, some stocks do not have any broker estimates.
