The S&P/ASX 200 is set to open higher after a strong lead from Wall Street and bullish overnight session for commodities.
Today’s ASX 200 Updates
Welcome to our live ASX coverage for Tuesday, September 16. We’re excited to trial this new format. Expect a high volume of posts pre-market and more periodic updates throughout the day. Today's live blog will wrap up around 2:00 pm AEST. Be sure to refresh manually for the latest updates — and let us know how we can make it even better.
ASX 200 higher, breadth improves
[2:05 pm] ASX 200 currently up 0.35%, trading near session highs. Sectors like Healthcare, Utilities, Industrials and Real Estate opened red, now trading in positive territory. Discretionary up 0.27% in early trade, now up 0.85%, with names like Wesfarmers (+1.1%), JB Hi-Fi (+1.6%) and Harvey Norman (+3.0%) all near record highs. Today's session feels quietly bullish, with solid breadth (68% of S&P/ASX 200 stocks trading flat or higher). The focus remains on the Fed, which is set to cut rates on Thursday morning. I guess it's a bit of a waiting game until then. That's all for Tuesday!
Coffee prices back near all-time highs
[1:10 pm] Coffee prices experienced a 35% pullback between January and July this year, but prices have V-shaped back near record highs and up 58% in the last twelve months. Hopefully this doesn't translate to $10 coffees ...

Gold eyes US$3,700
[1:05 pm] Gold hit another fresh all-time high overnight, up 0.98% to US$3,678/oz, though prices are currently flat for today's session.
While gold prices continue to trend higher, most gold miners are struggling for further upside after the recent move. Most names are up around 1-2% on Tuesday.

Coal stocks on the rise
[12:08 pm] Coal stock trading broadly higher, with China's coking coal futures rallying 5.4% to 1,235 yuan a tonne this morning.
A Citi report noted on Monday that coal capex in China surged 14% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, far outpacing the 3.4% rise in overall mining spending, reflecting the country's continued reliance on coal despite its shift toward lower-carbon energy sources. In August, China generated the most electricity ever via coal in August, according to official data.

Super Retail slips on CEO termination
[11:03 am] Shares in Super Retail Group dipped as much as 7.1% ($16.03) in early trade, now down 2.9% ($16.74).
E&P retail analyst Kade Madigan doesn't see this as much of a headwind, noting: "Proceedings against SUL around the non-disclosure of a relationship between the CEO and the former Chief Human Resources Officer have been undergoing since July 2024, with the market first being made aware of these issues in April 2024 ... Clearly, new information has come to light, however we are surprised around the timing given how long it has been since these investigations were initiated."

Uranium stocks at a glance

DUG Technology receives first PO
[9:43 am] DUG Technology has received its first purchase order under the Petronas deal, valued at $14.9 million. This PO covers the first year of a three-year contract.
The expected total value of the contract has been significantly increased to $43.3 million, up from the previous expectation of $23.8 million.
The increase in the total contract value is due to a larger scope of work, including higher compute and storage capacity, expanded use of the DUG Insight software, and the provision of dedicated geophysicists.
The initial Petronas deal announcement (2 Sep) drove a massive 25% rally in DUG shares.

Paladin Energy kicks off $300m raise
[9:13 am] Paladin Energy has launched a $300 million capital raising at $7.25 per share or an 8.0% discount to its last closing price. The equity raising proceeds will mostly be used to advance its Patterson Lake South project.
An unfortunate day to be raising capital, as uranium stocks are set to rally off the back of the US and UK news (highlighted further below).

Super Retail CEO terminated
[9:10 am] Super Retail Group terminated Managing Director and CEO Anthony Heraghty with immediate effect after receiving new information about his relationship with the company's former Chief Human Resources Officer.
The board concluded that his prior disclosures were unsatisfactory and lapsed all of Heraghty's incentives, including unvested awards and vested but unexercised rights.
CFO David Burns has been appointed Interim CEO while the company searches for a replacement.
Uranium stocks set to surge
[9:02 am] Expect a sea of green for local uranium names like Boss Energy, Deep Yellow, Bannerman Energy, Lotus Resources and more.
The Global X Uranium ETF rallied 9.3% overnight to the highest level since September 2012. Broad based move with several names like Cameco, Denison Mine and Uranium Energy Corp all up 8-15%.
The catalyst came from news that the US and UK will sign an agreement to accelerate nuclear power station approvals. The partnership will allow both countries to use each other's safety assessments, cutting licensing time from 3-4 years down to just two years. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright also said that America is actively looking to boost its uranium stockpiles.

Markets are soaring but sentiment remains depressed
[8:54 am] Despite the strong market performance, investor sentiment indicators are surprisingly low. The AAII bull-bear spread fell to -22% in the week ending September 10th, its lowest point since May and placing it in the 7th percentile historically. Other indicators from Jefferies and Goldman Sachs also show depressed sentiment.
Analysts point out that previous instances of rising markets vs. lagging sentiment serve as a bullish contrarian indicator. These set ups have seen the S&P 500 gain ~4.0% over the next three months and ~8% over the next six months.

France credit rating downgrade
[8:51 am] Fitch Ratings has downgraded France's credit assessment from AA- to A+, a move triggered by political instability and a swelling debt burden. The rating is now the lowest among major arbiters and is on par with Belgium, placing it one notch below the UK.
The downgrade is a direct response to France's fragmented and polarized political landscape, which has led to three different governments since mid-2024. Fitch believes this instability weakens the government's ability to implement substantial fiscal consolidation, making it unlikely to meet its target of reducing the budget deficit to 3% of GDP by 2029.
Bessent says China made 'aggressive demands'
[8:48 am] US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Chinese negotiators made "aggressive asks" during the Madrid trade talks, signaling friction despite his claim that the TikTok issue is "very close" to being resolved. China's move to announce an anti-monopoly violation by Nvidia during the talks appears to be a pressure tactic.
A key point of contention is China's attempt to link trade concessions to the TikTok deal, a move the US wants to avoid. With the divestiture deadline looming, the fate of TikTok remains uncertain, with the US administration stating it could "go dark."
The high-stakes talks are part of a broader diplomatic effort to pave the way for a potential meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. The discussions occur amid ongoing trade disputes, a fragile 90-day tariff truce, and recent tit-for-tat actions, including new US export controls and Chinese anti-dumping investigations targeting the US semiconductor industry.

China bond slump fuels stimulus speculation
[8:45 am] A recent selloff in Chinese bonds, which pushed yields to a nine-month high, has sparked speculation that the People's Bank of China (PBOC) is preparing to restart its debt purchases. The central bank had previously suspended these purchases in January.
The bond selloff was accelerated by a rotation of investor capital into a rising stock market and a proposed overhaul of mutual fund fees. The potential return of the PBOC as a bond buyer is seen as a way to restore confidence and halt rising government financing costs.
Copper prices hit 15-month high
[8:32 am] Copper has reached a 15-month high, climbing to over $10,173 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange. The price jump is part of a "risk-on" rally driven by market expectations of a Fed rate cut this week.
The Global X Copper Miners ETF has been pretty much vertical since April (up 73%).

Tesla shares rally as Elon Musk reveals $1 billion stock buy
[8:30 am] Tesla CEO Elon Musk purchased 2.57 million shares for approximately $1 billion, marking his first open-market purchase since February 2020 and his largest ever by value. This move is seen by traders as a strong vote of confidence in the company.
Tesla shares rallied 3.5% on the news, now up 18% in the last three sessions and down just 3% for the year. This boost comes after the stock had been weighed down by factors such as slumping sales, political controversy, and the end of certain US electric vehicle incentives.
