Mr Chaney joined Wesfarmers in 1983 as Company Secretary and Administration Manager. He became Finance Director in 1984 and was appointed Managing Director in July 1992. He retired from that position in July 2005. He was Chairman of National Australia Bank Limited from 2005 to 2015 and of Woodside Petroleum Limited from 2007 to 2018; a director of BHP and BHP Billiton Limited from 1995 to 2005; Chancellor of The University of Western Australia from 2005 to 2017 and President of the Business Council of Australia from 2005 to 2007.
