Graphite is a grey mineral with electrical conductivity properties that increases energy density in batteries, and shortens charging times. The growing popularity of electric vehicles has boosted interest in graphite, especially with its key role in reducing emissions and decarbonisation.
Traditional uses of graphite include the production of pencils, lubricants, steel, and glass manufacturing industries.
China is the largest producer with ~60% of the world’s production in 2020. Unlike gold and oil, there is no standard price index that quotes the spot price for graphite. Instead, the pricing is opaque and determined by actual transactions between buyers and sellers.
